Sanger Boat Sanger V-Drive 5-Rib Drag Hydro

1970 18 ft Sanger drag hydro, the famous and feared 5-rib, also known as the baby hydro. Boat and trailer were tastefully restored awhile back by a Tennessee professional before I bought it about 6 years ago. It has a BBChevy, Holley Dominator, Dart intake, aluminum heads, and Casale V-Drive. I replaced the older stainless headers and Borla mufflers with new ceramic coated Rewarders and new Bassett Hi-Po mufflers. I did not install the water lines to the headers, preferring to run them dry, but will include the Rewarder water lines and the old exhausts. A new AQ22 prop shaft and a used, but nice 2-blade cleaver have been installed, after snapping and sending the previous one to the bottom of the river here. I also added a whip strut to hopefully prevent this from occurring again. Unfortunately, the engine may have over revved at the time, probably being the cause of several broken roller rockers and their adjusters. Ive since cleaned out the debris there as best I could, replaced the noticeable broken parts, cold set the clearances, and idled the engine while hooked to the water hose, but highly recommend engine be torn down, inspected and flushed before using this boat to prevent additional damage. The V-Drive seeps a little oil, but has never been a problem. I really dont know much about the internal engine components, but was told it should put out about 600 hp, if healthy. Its a thrill to drive, scary for passengers, needs a bit of room to turn around, but extremely fast in a straight line. There are a few scuffs on the bottom of the sponsons from having to get hurriedly back on the trailer before a summer squall, minor enough, but wanted to mention. This is a good weather boat and you have to be very careful with larger waves and wakes, whether up on plane or not, but the 3 bilge pumps will maybe keep you afloat if you catch one wrong.

The clean, white gel coated hull, matching ribbed bench seat, and pearlescent tandem trailer show off the beautiful shape of this Sanger, compared to the generally more colorful examples out there. The gel coat has one small crack on the topside by the engine and slight discoloration in a few spots, but is overall very nice, smooth and shiny. This vintage race boat was restored to be a somewhat extreme recreational lake boat, and would look incredible behind any of the muscle cars of the same era.
