At 65 her 20 8 beam boasts room that would require 75-100 in a single-hull motor or sail yacht. In fact, the beam is so spacious between her twin hulls that the lower main level features a full beam master stateroom with a king-size berth and heads/showers, spanning the sponsons. Her main salon takes near full advantage of her 20 8 beam. The helm and observer stations are raised, granting excellent visibility all around. The salon features an L-shaped lounge that backs to the aft and port windows. Not shown are the aft windows that are raised and lowered by electric motors. Above, the Axcells sunroof lets fresh air in and does not buffet at speed. Opposite is a hutch that contains a 40 TV on a remote controlled electric lift with a Blu-ray player.Forward in the salon, her captains chair favors black leather. It is fully adjustable and faces a brown leather padded console with all-inclusive, lighted screens. Ten analogue gauges crown the helm. The helm features an assorted package from Raymarine, including a SmartPilot X-SOL Corepack, an ST70 autopilot control head, a T450 thermal night vision camera with low light video, an AIS500 Class B transceiver, port and starboard engine room color video cameras, an anchor/forward docking night video camera, an aft deck night video camera, and joystick maneuvering at the helm and aft deck.Four steps down, the ships lower salon features an elliptical dining table with white leather booth-style seating, a sit-down-stand-up bar with a pair of white, plump-round bar stools, and a serving space at port. Her galley features back-to-back onyx countertop cooking and dish washing areas, a convection oven, a large fridge, a dishwasher, a trash compactor and a glass top stove. Under and over cabinet storage is easy to reach.Forward of the lower salon, her master stateroom features a queen-size elevated berth with marble topped mahogany cabinets and a large vanity. Theres stowage aplenty alongside as well as beneath, individual bed-side lights, a large overhead porthole hatch that permits ambient light to shine through, and cedar-lined wardrobesHer master head features a glass shower, large mirrored vanity, and storage cabinets for towels.Within sponsons, two guest cabins each feature double wide berths, three opening ports, overhead portholes, and padded headboards for each double, providing hospitality for four guests. Each guest cabin also has its own air conditioning controls, head (identical to the master head shown above), television, and cedar-lined wardrobesTwo CAT C18s power this vessel, with 1,150 HP ZF surface drives. The hulls feature the High Efficiency Surface Effect design; a large open chamber forces pressurized air under the hull for an air-cushioned, hover-craft-type effect. HybridAir Technology Lift fans on the main engines engage around 1,350 rpm to force pressurized air into its lower pockets. The HybridAir fans are shown here, behind the engines. When spooled up, they create the air cushion, bringing air in from the exterior gills pictured above. These centrifugal lift fans are quiet and powerful. They draw about 6% of the engine's power output and turn it into 31,000 lb. of lift, about 50% of the yacht's weight.Specifications:LOA: 66 5 (including swim platform)Hull: 60Beam: 20 8Draft: 48Weight: 29.5 tonsShore Power: 50A 230VAC 60 HzWater: 190 USGFuel: 650 USGPower: 2x Caterpillar C18Surface Drives: 1,150 HP ZFSpeed: Estimated Max: 45 knSpeed: Cruise: 28 knGenerator: 15kW Westerbeke with Sound ShieldHow the Hull WorksThe Axcell 65 Catamaran is a hybrid hull, combining the properties of three different hull types, each known for efficient characteristics. It is one part catamaran with the inherent stability that comes from the wide footprint of a pair of separated hulls. As with most catamarans, the volumetric area within the tunnel decreases towards the rear of the hull, creating a compression effect as air passes between the sponsons and is trapped beneath the tunnel and the surface of the water, thus developing an increasing amount of lift before it is expelled at the stern of the craft. It is one part hovercraft, which forces air into a chamber (or a skirt). This creates lift and reduces wetted surface, thus minimizing drag. With the Axcell 65 Cat, this skirt is formed into each sponson. As the craft moves forward, the pressurized air follows a channel in the sponson that gradually becomes shallower, which creates compression and adds additional lift.It is one part surface effect vessel, which is a shallow draft hull form that forces air into a pocket with no place to escape. As air passes under the hull, it becomes compressed between the hull and the water's surface, eventually being forced to pass under the submerged section of the hull and exit at the rear. This creates an air cushion and a dramatic reduction in drag. This detail shot of the model shows the bottom of the hull. The Axcell 65 Cat is based on a pair of symmetrical sponsons that are V-shaped at entry, quickly transition into a cathedral design, then give way to a recessed cavity being pressurized by hydraulically driven fans; PTOs from the main engines power a hydraulic pump. This in-turn powers the blowers, providing approximately 31,000 lb. of lift to a boat that weighs around 60,000 lb. The fans take approximately 6% of the power off the main engines, which are C18s.One of the most distinctive features of the Axcell 65 Cat is a pair of signature "gills" located on each side of the boat. Mounted above the sheerline, away from spray, they provide fuel to a pair of large, centrifugal fans.As power on the C-18s come up, the centrifugal fans engage around 1,350 rpm, pressurizing the subsurface cavities and providing lift as the boat begins to plane. The fans are automatically synchronized to engine rpm and the transition is seamless. A noticeable amount of lift takes place and it is felt midship, at the center of gravity. At an economical cruise speed of 22 knots, the Axcell Cat is consuming 23 gph per engine.
