1941 Chris Craft Wood Boat Replica
This boat is titled in Texas as a Grady White/ Chris Craft. The hull is from a 1967 Grady White boat that I owned for many years. It originally was an outboard and has been modified to a Mercruiser inboard with a Casale V drive. The proper modification forms were filed with the State and were approved. This boat is insured with Haggerty.
The hull was repaired as necessary and painted with Sherwin Williams Tile Clad epoxy paint. The original hull had lap strake sides that I filled with structural foam and faired. This was then covered with mahogany floor underlayment that was epoxied and screwed on with brass screws. Then the Deck was framed up with treated plywood. The stringers were treated 2 x 10 lumber, epoxied in and taped with 4 inch fiberglass tape. All fasteners were galvanized, stainless or brass. The engine and V drive are bolted to the stringers with galvanized bolts.
The running gear is a Mercruiser 898, which is a 305 chevy small block with a 2 barrel carburetor, this engine is basically stock, with a .30 overbore and standard crank. There are 260 horse center outlet exhaust manifolds installed. The engine has 11.7 hours on it, and has synthetic oil installed. The V drive was bought used , disassembled , cleaned and reassembled with new gaskets and seals. Synthetic gear oil is installed. This is a 1:18 overdrive unit. The drive shaft is new, with new u joints and has been balanced. There is a Borg Warner velvet drive transmission. This unit was not overhauled and is working well. This is a 71-c unit, new designation I believe is 1017. Shifter is the original Chrysler unit with red jacket throttle and shift cables installed. These are used cables. The steering is Teleflex with a new cable. The Rudder, strut, whip strut, stuffing box, prop and prop shaft are all used but are tight and in good shape. The prop shaft is not stainless. Unknown material. Gauges are new Faria. New Sony stereo and speakers. Disappearing antenna. Old, hummingbird fish finder. These disappear if you dont want to look at the newer electronics.
The wood is cedar that was epoxied on to the mahogany underlayment in the manner that cedar strip canoes are fashioned. This is covered with 6 ounce fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin. I did not get a flawless job on this fiberglass , there are areas that did not wet out good that show as white patches , with the fiberglass cloth showing. These can be sanded down and re done to make them disappear. I just had gotten real tired of sanding by the time I got to this stage. The fiberglass is covered with automotive clear coat for U.V. protection.
There are four pop up stainless steel cleats, a big honking two horn train horn, disappearing bow light, stainless steel Windline ladder, stainless ski tow eyes and Aluminum thru hull exhausts. Small hardware is all standard chrome boat stuff. Wiring is mostly marine wire bought on E bay. There are two bilge pumps, one automatic and one manual. The blowers are pretty much worn out. They do work.
Trailer is an unknown vintage Long that came with the Grady White. There are new trailer rated tires and a new spare. Wheel bearings, lights, light wiring, tongue jack, safety chains and coupler are all new. Winch was cleaned and repainted. The trailer was painted with standard tractor enamel and clear coated. Boat pulls well.
Boat runs about 45 on the Faria dash speedo, Never got a chance to hook up a GPS to check this. I had an old Hallcraft parallel drive installed last year that was a 1:10 ratio, the boat may be a little faster with the Casale. I Have not had it out since I put the Casale in. Boat handles good, planes quick and tracks straight. There is some typical inboard torque steer.
