I FOUNDTHE OLDE MANNEAR MONTREAL CANADA IN 1989 AND RETURNED HER TO SEATTLE IN MAY OF 1990. THE HULL IS REBUILT; ORIGINAL DOUBLEPLANK MAHOGONY AT YOUNGQUIST MARINE ON LAKE UNION 1990/1991.SHE HAD MANY FANS AS THE HULL PROGRESSED. 1991 TO 2004 BUSY AT BOEING EVERETT ON THE 777 AND OTHER PROGRAMS. SHE SAT IN OUR OVERSIZED GARAGE GETTING LOVE, BUT VERY LITTLE ATTENTION.
SHE HAS HER CHRYSLER STRAIGHT EIGHT ROYAL MARINE ENGINE WHICH HAD THE FOLLOWING DONE BY MIKE MURLEY OF DOLPHINE MARINE IN FAIRHAVEN MICHIGAN. (MIKE IS ONE OF THE LAST OF THE CHRYSLER FACTORYTRAINED TECHNICIANS.) THE ORIGINAL BLOCK HAD BEEN REPAIRED AND DETERMINED UNACCEPTABLE, MIKE REPLACED IT WITH ANOTHER SAME BLOCK VERY LOW USAGE. HE SET IT UP ON ORIGINAL TOOLING AND BORED THE CYLINDERS OUT.030"' OVER FROM ORIGINAL BORE.
USING THE OLD METAL WATER PUMP CASING, MIKE MACHINED IT SO A MODERN RUBBER IMPELLER TYPE WATER PUMP COULD BE INSTALLED. THE ORIGINAL GENERATOR IS SHELLED OUT AND RE-INSTALLED TO GEAR DRIVE THE WATERPUMP. MIKE INSTALLED A NEW DUAL PULLEY ON THE FLYWHEEL AND A BELT DRIVEN MORPAR ALTENATOR, (THIS ALSO CAN PROVIDE A DRIVE FOR A FRESH WATER SYSTEM IF DESIRED.) MIKE REPLACED THE GIANT OILBATH FILTER SYSTEM WITH MODERN MORPARSPIN TYPE FILTER. REBUILT BOTH CARBORATORS, INSTALLED A WATER THERMASAT AND MOPAR ELECTRONIC IGNITION. ORIGINAL RUDDER ENLARGED WE ENLARGED THE WATER INTAKE AND EXHAUST FOR ADDED COOLING AND PERFORMANCE. if YOU NEED PARTS ANY MARINE OR MO PAR DEALER CAN GET YOU BACK UNDER WAY.
THESE BOATS HAD A ROT PROBLEM DUE TO DESIGN OF THE CEALINGS WHICH WERESOLID BOARD NOT ALLOWING AIR INSIDE THE FRAME AREA. TO ELIMINATE THIS CONDITION I INSTALLED MAHOGONYCEALINGS AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PICTURES. THE PORTHOLES ARE ORIGINAL, THE INSTRUMENTS ARE ORIGINALS AND TOTALLY RECONDITIONED, THE NEW INTERIOR CUSHIONS AND ENGINE COVERS WERE PROFESSIONALLY DONE, NOT HAVING ALL OF THE ORIGINALFLOOR FRAMES OR PANELS I DID COPY THE ONES I DID HAVE AND DESIGNED THE OTHERS.
THE HARDWARE IS EITHER ORIGINAL OR FROM ANOTHER RED & WHITE EXCEPT FOR THE STAINLESS TRIM WHICH WAS ALL CUSTOM MADE AND INSTALLED AND THE CLEATS WHICH I WAS UNABLE TO FIND. THE WITCHES CAP IS ORIGINAL PRE WAR RED & WHITE BUT I THINK IT GIVES THE OLDE MAN A DISTINT LOOK. THE FLAG STAFF IS ALSO PREWAR AND RECONDITIONED WITH A NEW MACHINED ATTACH PLATE AS I WAS UNABLE TO FIND AN ORIGINAL. THE PROPELLER AND SHAFT ARE BOTH NEW, SAME PITCH AND DIAMETER AS ORIGINAL.
I COULD NOT FIND TRIP RAILS, BUT HAVE THE UNIQUE ATTACH HARDWARE FOR THEM AND THE LOCATOR HOLES ARE DRILLED OUT INSIDE THE CABIN. SNAPS INSTALLED FOR COSMETIC APPEARANCE. ORIGINAL WINDSHIELD FRAMES; REWORKED AND NEW GLASS CUT AND PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED. A GLASSPORT WAS INSTALLED IN THE FORWARD HATCH TO PROVIDE MORE LIGHT IN THE CABIN. NOTE THE FRAME IS STAINLESS AND THE BUILDER CHROMED IT BY MISTAKE. NEW COTTON COVERING.BUT FOR A FEW EXCEPTIONS THE CHROME WORK WAS DONE BY QUEEN CITY PLATING IN MUKELTEO, WA. SOME MISC. PARTS WERE DONE IN FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS.
I COMPLETED THE THE OLDE MAN THE SUMMER OF 2006 IN FAIRHAVEN MICHIGAN AND LAUNCHED HER AT PEARL BEACH, MICHIGAN ALSO ON THE DIXIE HIGHWAY,JUNE 3RD IN THE NORTH CHANNEL OF THE ST CLAIR RIVER WITHIN A FEW MILES OF ALGONAC; THE WATERS OF HER PLACE OF ORIGIN. ON HER MADEN VOYAGE HER FIRST PORT OF CALL WAS THE ALGONAC CHRIS CRAFT FACTORY WHERE SHE FIRST GOT HER KEEL WET IN 1947. CRUSING ALONG THE BANKS OF THE CHANNEL WE GOT SO MANY CHEERS AND MANY BOATS CAME ALONG SIDE TO SEE HER.
SHE MADE HER FIRST PUBLIC APPEARENCE AT THE CHRIS- CRAFT 21ST ANNUAL PLANT JAMBOREE, "WHERE IT ALL BEGAN" JUNE 24TH 2006 AND WAS A CENTER OF ATTENTION ESPECIALLY WHEN I STARTED HER STRAIGHT EIGHT. LATER IN JULY WE TOOK HER NORTH TO THE UPPER PENINSULA AND THE PRESTEGIOUS LES CHENEAUX ISLANDS ANTIQUE WOODEN BOAT SHOW IN HESSEL MICHIGAN WHERE AGAIN SHE DREW CROWDS AND TOOK 2ND PLACE IN THE PRE 1968 CRUISER CLASS. ON HER WAY BACK TO WASHINGTON WE STOPPED IN HOLLAND MICHIGAN AND LAUNCHED HER IN LAKE MICHIGAN. GOT MANY STARES AND CHEERS. ON THE ROAD WE GOT HUNDREDS OF HONKS AND THUMBS UP. EVERY STOP FOR GAS WAS A PLEASURABLE EXPERIENCE AS SO MANY ASKED ABOUT HER. PATS ON THE BACK ALWAYS APPRICIATED.
SINCE THEN SHE HAS GRACED THE WATERS OF LAKE WASHINGTON AND LAKE UNION IN SEATTLE. WHEN DOCKED SHE BECOMES A POPULAR BACKDROP FOR FAMILY PICTURES.
NEVER IN SALT WATER.
AS A TOTALLY DISABLED VETERAN I CAN NO LONGER GET IN OR OUT OF HER AND WANT HER TO BE USED. I THINK THE HOBBS METER HAS ABOUT 110 HOURS ON IT. SHE IS LOCATED IN OLYMPIA WASHINGTON WHERE SHE IS NOW OUTSIDE, BUT CAREFULLY COVERED AND WATCHED EVERYDAY. THE TRAILER TIRES ALL FIVE WERE REPLACED WITH NEW IN 2012 BECAUSE OF AGE NOT WEAR AS THE 1990 EZ LOADER TRAILER BUILT SPECIFICALLY FOR THE OLDE MAN HAS LESS THAN 15,000 MILES ON IT AND IS IN GREAT SHAPE.
