UPDATE FEBRUARY 27TH 2019:
Many Questions, so here I will try to answer them,
1. The electric motors are liquid cooled, as well as the motor controller. The cooling system for the electronics should be an isolated system that uses standard coolant you buy from auto parts store BUT make certain the coolant you buy is the BLUE coolant for Asian Vehicles, the motors are Japanese made by Hitachi. You would install a heat exchanger that would use raw water (from lake or ocean) to cool the isolated system coolant (google marine heat ex-changer to get the idea);
2. If you need a trailer please check craigslist for a used trailer that can carry a 32' boat, there are many used one's for sale all along the eastern coast of Florida, S. Carolina and N. Carolina, OR simply hire a boat transporter through the online shipping company 'UShip' they have great rates as long as you are flexible with dates;
3. I have already stated that the Electric Motors are 80Kw 210HP 3 phase AC Synchronous Permanent Magnet Motors, they were built by Hitachi, excellent quality and will out last you and me both. They are rated for up to 10k RPM this is why you will need a 3:1 reduction gearbox to connect the motors to the existing prop shafts; The Controller is also made by Hitachi Power Electronics. It is a special single controller that can operate two motors, very special design. The controller has the ability to control each motor independently or in unison, very very amazing actually. The motors and controller have already been bench tested and operated......I will not give any further information about the electronics, this is an emerging technology and could easily be exploited into a very lucrative business if you wish for that to happen, this is cutting edge in the Marine world and I am not inclined to just throw it all out there. IF you buy the boat,THEN you will get the information, but not until then.
4. The boat does have a flybridge, however the fly bridge had to be taken apart for transport because with the flybridge in place the boat was over the legal height limit. The flybridge has been placed on the front bow area and strapped down under the tarp you see in the pictures of its current condition of being covered up by blue tarp;
5. I am not available to show the boat, and the boat is loaded with all the parts, material, and supplies that I have on hand to finish this project and to try to walk around inside the boat right now you would have to unload all the stuff, and that is just not going to happen;
6. The condition of the boat IS exactly how I have described it, and the Motors and controller and the electronic throttles are located inside the boat at this time underneath all the other parts and supplies. The boat yard does have security and the security guard is my friend so he watches the boat very closely for me.
7. If for any reason the boat does not sell, I intend to just move it to long term storage in a warehouse until I can get time to finish it myself. This boat completed would be worth a great deal of money, that I am certain of. It would be a boat that MANY people would pay a high price for considering that marine gasoline at some marinas is over 4 bucks a gallon and the twin 454's that were in the boat drank down about 25 gallons an hour! so with electric it will not take long to get the investment back, and not to mention that the Electric Motors are QUIET, virtually no sound at all! and no exhaust fumes, no changing the oil, many many benefits........surprised I even need to say that, not to mention the benefits to the environment.
UPDATE FEBRUARY 28TH 2019
What has been done and what is left to do: THIS IS AN OVERVIEW as to my plan, but YOUR plan maybe different to suit you and your needs.
Done or in progress:
1. The entire interior of the boat had crappy carpet in it, and some kind of fuzzy material on the hull sides and ceiling. I removed all of that. The boat was being refinished in Red cherry Veneer that is contact cemented to the existing marine grade plywood. (all plywood was stripped of original finishes, sanded and painted with epoxy paint prior to laminating on the Red Cherry Veneer.
2. The original fridge, water heater and electric range were removed (old). The original Formica counter top removed and a new Epoxy finished top installed. A new double burner propane range is stored inside the kitchen cabinet and new propane supply lines have been run.
3. The plan was to use all propane appliances such as cook top, tankless propane water heater and of course propane S.S. grill to mount in rear cockpit area(Grill is in box in boat).
4. All original old fresh water supply lines have been removed. New Pex water line (Blue and Red) are stored in the boat, not installed.
5. The head has not yet been touched. There is a Raritan Lectra/san toilet system in the boat to be installed.
6. The new windlass, chain, rode and new anchor have been installed and tested.
Needed to complete
1. Galley: will need kitchen sinks, plumbing, gas range installed, refrigerator, microwave (if desired).
2. Head will need remodeled.
3. Upper salon will need remodeled to match areas below decks.
4. Aft Cabin has been insulated (original was not insulated) needs finishes installed (hard panels have been veneered and clear finish has been applied, but they are not installed. LED lighting has been installed.
5. Flybridge will need to be re-assembled and installed. Flybridge controls, breakers, fuses, instruments will need updating to work with the new electric propulsion system.
6. New Depth transducer will need to be installed (do not have one pilot hole for the transducer is drilled in hull at forward cabin sole.
7. Swim Platform will need to be re installed (was removed for transport) The swim platform is actually new, looks like crap because it is dirty, just install it and clean it.
8. For the propulsion system you will need a high voltage Lithium battery pack, Get this from a salvage Chevrolet Volt, do NOT pay retail. The Chevy volt battery pack will work perfect for this and they are routinely sold on classifieds board for about 2k, well worth it!
9. You will need to also source the High voltage battery charger from a salvage Chevy volt so that way you keep to similar components. You could get a level 2 charger, but for that you will need 220Vac to power it, but it will charge the batteries much much faster.
10. You should install a solar array system along with a wind generator and charge controller to help charge the house batteries which would be a normal 12Vdc battery bank. You connect an Inverter to the house bank to convert 12Vdc to 115 VAC which in turn you connect to the AC systems of the boat and/or connect the HV battery charger to charge the HV batteries.
11. You should also install a generator (the boat originally had a gas generator) but get a diesel generator (diesel gensets operate much much more efficient than gas generators. (source a good used Westerbeke 8Kw from classifieds board or Craigslist save a lot of money! The boat has a 200 gallon fuel tank that was gasoline, the gasoline has been removed as the plan was to go diesel.
12. With the diesel generator install an automatic start control panel to automatically start the generator when the voltage of the batteries become low, this way you do not get caught with no power to start the genset.
13. The generator will supply more than enough power for the boat and the motors in case of no sun or wind.
14. You will need a 16000 btu reverse marine ac unit (The new duct work is already in place. Again can probably source a good used unit with control panel for about 800.00 make certain the unit runs off 115Vac.
15. You will need to get correctly sized battery cables and fuses, and other incidentals required for the propulsion system (go check out EVTV online and/or check out youtube for EV CONVERSIONS you will learn a lot about EV conversions there many great projects listed there.
16. You will need a heat exchanger (marine type radiator) to use to cool the motors and the controller. Just like in a normal marine system you will use raw water from the lake or ocean to cool the motor system coolant. Very very simple to design and install.
17. All the new finished in the boat were in fact sourced through classifieds board including the Cherry Veneer used to re finish the interior and the LED lights and other hardware.
o.k. as far as cost to finish? Well I dont know if you are planning on doing the work yourself or going to pay someone to do the work, with that being said I am certain that by sourcing good deals and doing the work yourself with the boat in your driveway so you are not paying boat yard fees, im certain you can finish the boat for about 15k. BUT if you do a good job and keep to high quality yacht finishing (remember a boat IS a piece of furniture) the boat would be worth a great deal of money, no question about it.
Hope the above helps.
On Mar-05-19 at 05:11:59 PST, seller added the following information:UPDATE MARCH 3RD 2019:O.k. folks tonight the auction ends and either someone will bid higher than the reserve and own it. I have received an interesting message concerning this project boat and I think it would be important for all of you to read, including my reply."Nice
honest write up in my opinion. And seems like a lot of stuff for 5k. I
live on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. We had a local
boat being converted to electric, seems it used Ossa or Odessa 800 hp
electric motors that were owned by Glacier Bay. Glacier Bay went out of
business 2009 ish. This Boat was called "retired sailor iii" ended up a
bust, not sure why, it's diesel now. here is the link
http://www.chamberlainyachts.com/yacht-for-sale/retired-sailor-iii-237899/
say it was built here, but now lives in ft lauderdale. So I'm
always interested in the electric boat conversions they seem more doable
than ever,, thought I would say hello, I'm currently invoved with a
boat and the company makes electric boats, Electric Boat, Quebec, model
is a Bruce 22. I'll be down there in a couple of weeks, sorry I
have my own boat project atthe moment, but like to keep up on whats is
available should a client show up here with that request. I had a
client ask to convert a 28' to electric some years back, but I talked
him into Tohatsu twin diesel 40 hp outboards on a pod. In the end his
health stopped the project before starting.Seems like by the
time owners either know what they want or can afford it, they are too
old. Visited a boat built and commissioned about 3 years ago, sad story
builder died just after completion, and owner suffered a fall, now the
boat is in limbo."MY REPLY"Thank you for your message, yes the project with the parts, supplies and materials included is worth many times what the reserve is. I looked up the Bruce 22 seems like a very nice electric runabout boat, however it is interesting to take notice that the Bruce 22 with a single 100Kw motor is selling at a base price of over $250,000.00! over a quarter of a million for a boat that does not have Cabins, No Galley, No Head, No Salon, No ect, and here is a boat with all those things including 2 80Kw motors!"Look folks if you can not understand the opportunity staring you in the face, then I just do not know what to say
