1971 Slickcraft SS 215 Project Boat
The boat is currently in outside storage under cover. I have had the boat for many years and have done extensive and detailed restoration to date. I no longer have the ability to finish for several reasons. I have hundreds of detailed photos showing the process and materials I've used to date. All original hardware and parts are complete and included. Boat was 100% deconstructed, labeled and photographed for reassembly. Here is a general recap of what has been accomplished:
Original Mercruiser 165 straight 6 fully re-built by an Indianapolis racing engine shop. All receipts and photo's available. Bored 30 over, milled and decked head, all new marine parts. Electronic ignition was installed. New plug wires and wire management.2 Mercruiser outdrives complete. Original which has a crack from water @ propeller and 1 1971 spare. New gasket and bellows included. Bellows install tool and engine / outdrive alignment tool included.
Complete demolition of transom, stringers, bulkheads, and sole. After demolition hull was fully sanded, repaired with West System epoxies and received 4 coats of Interlux Bilgekote. 1.5" fully laminated ABX marine plywood transom, fully glassed with West Systems Epoxies. New mahogany stringers replicated from original rotted stringers, glassed with West System. New ABX bulkheads, framing and sole. Under sole rod holder tubes up to 8'-6" rods. Hull and topside were separated and reattached with BASF polyurethane sealant and ABX backer strips for added strength and waterproofing. Foam floatation was replaced with closed cell polystyrene rigid insulation and foamed in place with Hilti foam. Drainage chase, with plugs, was installed to prevent any future moisture in floatation cells. Gunwalls were re-framed with cedar 1x material and foam filled for strength and acoustics. Future wiring chases were installed for electronics from helm to transom. All original gauges were labeled when removed.
The hull was sanded and fully restored with West System high density epoxy resin. Interlux Interprotect 2000e was used as a base for the bottom finish. It is the best barrier coat product and will allow the boat to be left in water if anti-fouling paint is applied. The barrier coat was finished with Interlux Offshore VOC epoxy, which can be trailered. Below the waterline is 100% complete. Above the waterline hull has 1 coat of Interlux Epoxy Primekote. Ready to finish primer and apply finish paint.
Topside has been thoroughly repaired with West System epoxies and has been sanded. All crazing, cracking and scratching of gle coat was cleaned, grooved and faired. Minor touch up repairs remain before sanding. It's about 90% complete if you are trying for a finish with zero imperfections. I have filled in the stock rod holders because I've found those to be a source for water migration into hull. These days most guys run some sort of mounted rod holder system and don't really use these gunwall holders.
Trailer is a 1984 EZ Loader galvanized bunk trailer. Brand new bunks and carpet were installed to match the hull profile. I custom welded new bunk supports to fit the hull. New LED lights. New winch and jack stand with wheel.
Brand new custom heavy duty cover that can be trailered. The craftsman that makes my covers, which I've had 3, does an excellent job. He makes most of the Indy Car covers. My covers have lasted outside in the elements for at least 10 years up to 14 years and are always trailered.
New fuel and vent lines were installed below the sole. New blowers and ductwork were installed. I have a new captain's chair with adjustable up and down plus slide pedestal. Stainless steel destroyer steering wheel.
I've gone way above and beyond with zero shortcuts. All work has been documented with photos. All materials are Interlux and West System. I have had 3 Slickcrafts and currently run a 1974 215 hardtop. I have restored a 1974 235 in the past. I have invested hundreds of hours and roughly $5,000 in the boat. I am willing and able to deliver the boat if a purchase agreement is made. You will have to come to the southeast side of Indianapolis to view the boat. Thanks for your time.
Questions
I have a 1971 like yours in great shape. I am in Rochester , N.Y. and have used it in Lake Ontario. My father was the original owner. Would you have any interest in it?
