This boat is in EXCELLENT shape. So many features and extras have been added to this boat to make it a versatile machine with comforts for the entire family. The 280 Sundeck is another amazing example of Sea Ray's progressive product engineering in action. This big family fun boat strikes a perfect balance between function, style, and innovation with its abundant seating, sporty good looks, and many "gee-whiz" features.

For those who boat on large bodies of water and the U.S. is loaded with them the Sea Ray 280 Sundeck is one deckboat that can leave the dock when others stay in port. At 28 feet long with a deep-V deadrise of 21 degrees and the satisfying heft that a well-made hull weighing 5,726 pounds gives you, crossing an angry Lake Erie for a weekend in Put-in-Bay is no worries, mate. It certainly didnt have any problem holding its own on a rumpled 38,000-acre Lake Lanier, north of Atlanta.

You could go with the standard 300 hp MerCruiser 350 MAG and not know what you are missing, but after testing it with the 375 hp 496 MerCruiser, its hard to imagine wanting less performance. Despite the deep-V hull we got on plane in 4.3 seconds, reached 30 mph in just 7 seconds and hustled to a top speed of 47.3 miles per hour.

The 280 Sundeck belies its size with nimble handling, aided by power steering and the DTS (Digital Throttle and Shift) that uses drive-by-wire technology. We were able to throw it into some very extreme turns with perfect tracking and predictability.

As fun as it is to turn the key at the high-tech helm station and slice and dice your way across the waves, the boats best role might be as an entertainment platform on the hook or at a raft-up. The signature feature is the convertible stern sunpad that was borrowed from the 540 Sundancer, the benchmark for comfort.

For wannabe boat chefs like me, theres an optional gas grill thats big enough to cook for the dozen guests this boat is rated for. Theres a deep sink next to it with running water and a generous 20-gallon tank for quick cleanups. And when the dinner bell clangs, insert the standard cockpit table.

Seating in the cockpit is ample and the gunwales are high for safety like those in the bowrider seats, which are simply some of the best in the business. After snack time, fire up the 496 DTS, take the wakeboards out of the centerline storage area and enjoy the massive wake this boat can generate.
