1918/1993 Packard Gentlemans Racer
Dual Cockpit Classic Wood Boat/1of only 3 built
Note: Relisting boat after just being professionally serviced and now runs beautifully since being stored in a heated garage for a few years. Boat was listed on classifieds board earlier this year and a buyer did not read fully read the description that I had not tried to start the boat at that time due to old fuel in tank. I let him out of deal. Fuel drained, carb rebuilt and running with a deep, throaty rumble again.
Description:
One of only three Gentleman's Racers commissioned by the Packard Boat Company and hand built by famed upstate NY boat builder John Ford as well as Gary Scherb of Old Time Boats in Florida. The three Boats were personally ordered by the president of the Packard Boat Company and are based off of Hacker Speedster plans. Of the 3boats built, this was the president's own personal boat that he kept in his private collection from new until his passing.
Built in 1993, this boat is powered by a Chevrolet V6 by specially built by Flagship Marine Engines in Punta Gorda, Florida. Was told the running gear cost $30,000 alone at the time. Boat is capable of speeds of55-60 mph and uses hydraulic steering for easy controls.
After discussing boat with both Flagship Marine and Gary Scherb, wood is said to be Honduras mahogany and coated with epoxy sealer with 12-14coats of varnish and has a beautiful, deep finish. Boat measures 18'with a 5' beam. Boat is good cruiser while also designed to be very fast if desired. Wood is in beautiful condition, no cracks in varnish as boat was always kept inside when not in use and out of the sun. Not 100% perfect but pretty close.
Back history: Packard Boat Company of Sarasota, Florida designed and custom built retro-styled powerboats from 1988 to 2002 in very limited numbers and were known for their very high quality and great handling based off of 1920's-30's designs. The Packard Boat Company President was a retired engineer, boat racer and a 3rdgeneration steel worker and his family originally made parts for the Packard Automobile and Boat engines.
PerBoats.com ...the president and CEO of Packard Boats, classic gentlemens runabouts are something he remembers from his childhood not only because his family had several, but because his father's General Marine Corp. built more than 2000 mahogany runabouts between 1939 and WWII.
This specially commissioned boat has a 2 person seated pilot area in the rear with a forward 2 passenger seat just forward of the midships.
Titled a 1918 Packard, it was shown at various shows from NY to Florida and was only used in fresh water, which is evident by it's beautiful condition. Trailer included and both boat trailer title and boat title are free and clear. Very period correct steering wheel, Classic looking gauges, hardware, etc. while being all modern running gear. Boat is designed to look very old while being reliable and easy to maintain. Running/Nav lights, bilge pump, engine compartment blower all in working order. Stainless is beautiful.
One of the two sister boats is owned and used by a private collector in the mid-west after being a display, promotional boat for a different company for years. Whereabouts of the 3rd boat is unknown.
