How to describe this vessel . . ? I guess some history is called for. . .
This vessel was originally owned by two airline pilots. The keel was laid down in 1966and the boat completed a year later and titled as a 1968. She had some custom work done to suit their needs. One of which is still intact, a custom 100 bottle, conditioned, cedar wine cellar.
Through their years of ownership, the boat was well maintained and upgraded as normal. She was sold off in thelate 80s and we lost track of her. What was obvious was that she was not well maintained. In the early 2000sthe boat was bought by a custom home builder/yacht builder. This is where the story getsinteresting...
This vessel was basicallyrebuilt from the keel up! 70% of the hull was replaced, includinga new transom. Deck and house were just about removed so the engineroom could be accessed for the repower job. Complete new plumbing wasinstalled to mid 2000 standards. Complete rewire was done to 2004specs. 6 new reverse cycle air/heat units were added. 4 new, 150gallon fuel tanks were added.A new 300-Galwaste tank was installed. 2new 150-Galfreshwater tanks were installed.
Below decks is where the real $$ was spent!
2 new, off the shelf Caterpillar 3126, 420 HP engines were installed, (We did the research. The serial numbers of these 2 engines do not fall into the number range of motors that Cat had issues with. These take regular Cat. Oil, not special oil.), coupledwith 2 new transmissions. Anew 17Kw Northern Lights diesel Genset was installed. A 450 Gal. Aqua-Whisper water maker was installed. New A/C intake pump, a new Reverso engine oil change system, twin Racor, 900FG filter system, remote engine control panels with keyed start and a full set of gages,a new fuel manifold and fuel transfer pump allowing movement of fuel to/from any tank to the other, completedry, fire suppression system and then the engine room was completely insulated, and sound deadened.
The teak decks were removed, and marine plywood was installed and completely fiberglassed by huge sheets of glass, then specific areas had Awlgrip applied for traction. The house was then rebuilt maintaining her original "period"design, using modern materials. All new deep tint windows were added.
The salon is wood city! Beautiful wood walls and ceiling arches. Complete new vinyl ceiling sheets were laid. All new recessed lighting, with dimmers was installed. Custom wood lower helm station was built and serves as the entertainment center also, housing a huge flat screen LCD TV and wiring for 5 TVs, (currently has 3). Also has a Trac-Vision satellite dome for mobile reception (REMOVED).New Sony home theater system has been added that includes Infinity speakers (it really rocks!).Salon boasts a 360 Deg. view.
Mid-decks houses the galley and dining area. If you love to cook and entertain, you should see this galley. There is approximately 16' of counter space, not including the custom double bowl sink! Not many boats can boast those dimensions. Full 6 door pantry with roll out shelves. She houses all functioning Bosch appliances, 4 burner cooktop, full size residential oven, full size DW, garbage disposal, aresidential size 2 door GE fridge with icemaker and water through the door system, and a countertop coffee maker and microwave. The galley is served by its own reverse osmosis water purifier.(REMOVED) All appliance fronts match the cabinetry. New recessed lighting (dimmable) was installed in wood paneled ceiling with wood arches. Washer and dryer built into kitchen cabinetry. Dryer is brand new.
Moving forward and down is a small bath with shower, toilet and pedestal sink. In the bow is the forward berth, full size bed, 2 closets, 4 portholes, and an opening skylight/escape hatch.
Aft of the galley and down are the main sleeping quarters. 1 "crew" bedroom with2 single beds, 2 windows and 2 closets, 1 small bedroom that houses 1 single, 1closet, 1 window and double as a work/computer room. (Bunkbed added to this room) This room has now been completely redone, shelves removed and walls stripped, repairedand 2 coats of premium paint applied. The carpet was pulled up and an old floor hatch removed and repaired. The same carpet was reinstalled. The master bedroom is again, wood city! Approximately 160 sq. ft., it has a custom raised wood platform that houses aqueen size mattress. 4windows, 8 half height cabinets (4' tall) with full length shelves along the tops. These cabinets now have full length shelves installed and have received a coat of Zinsser primer/sealer. There is an entertainment center with shelves, a full-sizehanging clothes closet, (that is cedar lined), 1 opening porthole/escape hatch, 2 built in nightstands with brushed nickel swing arm lights, and vinyl ceilings with wood arches.
The main bathboasts anoversize tub, 2 windows, separate marble shower, single bowl sink with cabinet, linen closet, and head. All new plumbing fixtures are Kohler. All new recessed lighting, (dimmable),in all lower aft rooms. The exterior walls of the bath have just been skim coated with plaster and the room was repainted.
A new Ray marine nav suite was installed with separate heading, speed, depth, and chart plotter displays. The existing Si-Tex radar display was kept (REMOVED).
Up on the flybridge new seating was added and included a massive, custom cherry inlay table that seats at least 10 people. All custom cushions are like new.Full controls up there and they work. Stereo/CD system with built in Bose speakers. Stainless steel gas grill and small fridge (Fridge removed),
That owner spent well over $ 900,000 on the rebuild only 7 years ago! (Now14 years ago)
The vessel was then donated to the marine academy in NY where it was used as a fund-raisingvessel. The academy kept up the mechanical maintenance, but unfortunately left the housekeeping maint. fall off to the point where she was falling into disrepair again.
The previous owner before us bought it from the academy 3 years ago. He added new salon furniture, new dining furniture, a new Garmin chart plotter system and converted the small bedroom to a storage room. They brought the interior and exterior surfaces back up to snuff in their early years of ownership. The genset fields and winding were completely replaced (as a whole unit)in 2012. 2 new raw water pumps were installed in2012. Unfortunately, this last year the boat is again falling behind in housekeeping and exterior maintenance. They pulled the boat and had a bottom blast and repaint done in 2013. The wood hull (above the waterline) was repainted in 2013.She has an awesome swim platform for the kids!
This is where we enter the picture. We purchased the boat and have undertaken a new maintenance regime. The boat was scrubbed clean from the fly bridge canvas to the waterline. Interior surfaces were scrubbed from the ceilings to the engine room. Carpets were professionally cleaned. All maintenance was performed on the appliances. New Microwave. New coffeemaker. Freshwater tanks were sanitized. Lighting was replaced. New salon furnishing was installed. All new bedding was purchased. A brand-newqueen mattress was custombuilt and installed. A new removable platform was installed under the master mattress to aid in access to the aft tanks. All showers/tub were stripped and re-caulked. Both electric heads were stripped and are in good condition. Someoder bilge pumps were replaced with auto-sensor Rule pumps. New shaft packing was installed. We just added a 2000W power inverter so you could run 120v chargers and micro/fridge while underway, without running the generator. Fresh oil change was done.New Reverso pump impellers installed in the engine oil change system.Fresh fuel filters were installed. Genset fuel system was bled, reroutedand checked. Engine air intakes have beenrerouted for better fuel efficiency. A diver was recently under her and I have a signed statement from him attesting that all is good. New EPIRB.
What makes this boat different from comparablesis the fact that she didn't just get a cosmetic redo. Other boats still have the original Detroit'sin them. Not us!
Wood boats hate fresh water. This boat has always been in salt or brackish water.Good for the wood!
The boat is now a "work in progress". We will be stripping what is left of the exterior varnish this spring and redoing the handrails and sole plates. Si-Texradar now operates, but needs tuned to make sure it functions properly.Wood flooring has fallen into disrepair and will be spot replaced where needed.2 A/C units are non functioning, ( AC guy say not worth fixing.) Two new 12,000 btu, reverse cycle, marine air conditioners have been installed, cost over $5000! The custom cherry fly bridge table is in the middle ofa strip and refinish (Completed)4th bedroom will be converted back to do double duty as single bed/computer room. (Completed).
We just did a1500 mile relocation cruise, and everything checks out.Fuel consumption was an amazing 7.5 GPH! Ran the Albemarle sound and the Chesapeake in lousy sea conditions (5') and the grey lady took it all in stride with no issues! Engines have less than690 hrs. on them! Auto pilot works as new.Exterior maintenance is limited to handrails and hull. Everything else is fiberglass.
There are many other items, too numerous to list. Most all furnishings stay onboard, all utensils stay onboard. Many extra filter cartridges for everything that takes a filter, stay with the boat.
