Gyded Missel Boat
This boat was recently pulledfrom the barn it sat in, unmolested and unused since 1976. The boat was one of three made of this modelby the Portland Boat Company in Portland Oregon. It was made for speedwith an Oldsmobile J2 engine with a hydraulic transmission, both still in theboat. For those that know, this is indeed the Oldsmobile J-2 Tri-Powerengine with various vintage speed parts. Note: last owner found that it took less tuning to use a single carb, so that is what is on it. Original tri-carb manifold and carbs available - will negotiate with buyer if wanted. The fact that the boat was stored inside keptthe wood in great shape. There is NO dry rot found on the boat. Itook the interior out (easy to do) to confirm this and would be happy to give aserious buyer a virtual tour via face time (I phone). I impulsivelybought the boat when it was posted to Craigslist a couple of weeks ago, notrealizing what is involved in giving such a boat the respect it deserves.I am confident that with minimal effort I could have it running an on thewater. I did take an afternoon properly turning the motor over (usedmiracle mystery oil overnight before turning over). It turned smoothlywith the new battery I have put in it. I also put new tires on thefactory original trailer (trailer has some surface rust, but minimal, and nostructural issues showing. Trailer bearings were greased prior to driving theboat to my home where it now sits in another garage in Toledo, WA..
"GydedMissel", that is the model of this boat (Pronounced "GuidedMissile") and I have the cast missile logo as shown in pictures.
I apologies for usingthe word Chris Craft in the headline, but the rarity of this boat demanded afind a way to let those that might be interested, find it. IMPORTANT:I have met the owner of the refurbished sister ship to this boat that isshown in the pictures. He was working inthe Portland factory when this was built and is an encyclopedia of informationand is currently giving his boat a full re-restoration now. Ironically, he and the other boat are only acouple miles from my home.
PICTURES: The picture of the boat in the driveway was right after it cameout of the garage this year and is how it looks now. I have included afew photos of the outside and the inside so you can see the condition of theinside. This boat was one of the first to integrate fiberglass into aboat. The outer side shells are somesort of fiberglass sheet for a smooth look. I included a picture of thevery 1st of the 3 built, a show winning boat that also still survives in thePortland metro area. I will repeat, the boat I am selling is the boat onthe trailer, and pictured in some of the shots, not the one with the whitesides. I have also included a few pictures of the boats early life givento me by the past owner.
YEAR OF BOAT: The boat was advertised to me as a 1959, thoughthe title shows 1968. I am told by thepast owner and they fellow that worked at the factory that the boat was made inthe late 50s, and it is likely that it was used by the dealership/owner untilit was sold retail in 1968, so that was the date on the title. The vintage year of the motor backs that up,so I am listing as a 1959.
To summarize: The boatis in great shape, with no major structural issues. There are some issuesthat I'll list as clearly as I can: Port windshield is cracked and willneed to be replace (any glass shop can cut this flat piece), the motor does notrun, but I can confirm it turn over. I put in new plugs, distributor andrelated stuff, but did not add gas, or try to fire it. The boat will needa light sanding, pretty much all over and re-varnishing/paint. Expect to haveto re-glue some of the delaminating wood veneer as it has dried over the years. The trailer should be sanded, or sand blasted and painted. Theseats, floorboards dash, etc, are all in very sound solid shape, no rot.You should expect to reupholster the boat as the vinyl is obviously dated andgetting stiff. All lights work on the trailer.
Understand this will bea project for someone and you should have a passion and understanding of whatyou are getting into with any wooden boat. I did not, and for thatreason, am not in a position to treat this boat the way it should be treated.
I will add a few more pics well prior to end of auction. Ask if you would like specific pics. Good Luck.
