That alone should give away the performance side of this boat but, if not, you'll see that the seat bottoms fold down so the pilots can stand, firmly bolstered, to absorb the impact from speeds over the half-century mark. There are some other giveaways that might alert the unwary, like the steeply raked windshield where most family boats have more of a barrier against wind and spray or, if you see the 23-degree transom deadrise that puts her well into deep-V hull country for taking on offshore swells. If you get close enough, take a gander at the fat Faria speedometer on the dash, with the peg way downhill at the 80 mph mark. What we have here, folks, is a boat with the soul of a racer and the temperament of a mild-mannered runabout. It all depends on just how brave you feel when you push the loud lever forward. Go ahead, make your day. With a sun pad over the engine hatch aft (and covering about two acres with softly padded vinyl), it's obvious that this is no express cruiser. A gently curved bench seat takes care of several guests, and then there are the two bolstered thrones for the pilot and navigator. The wood-grained dash is neatly set up in two rows, with Faria engine instruments up top and twin tachs, speedo and trim on the lower level. Our test boat had single-lever engine controls, and the drive switches were right below where your hand would fall with the throttle well advanced. Under the Teleflex tilt wheel is a row of toggles and breakers for the electrical system, but they're a bit awkward to find unless you're very familiar with the boat. In any case, peering down to find the right switch when you're in a situation that requires a quick horn blast is probably not when you want to take your eyes off the road.Step below, and you'll find a comfortably appointed cabin that doesn't quite have full headroom, but would still be suitable for an overnight outing. In mid-cabin is a U-shaped settee around a removable table, and the entire forward section is devoted to a huge permanent V-berth. Two square Bomar deck hatches let in plenty of light and air, and the cream-colored padded hull sides make the cabin pleasantly bright.A large counter to port of the door is your galley, so plan on room service or pizza deliveries. There's room underneath to add a refrigerator, a sink is tucked out of the way and the counter has space enough for a stove but, as delivered, you're pretty much in the peanut butter sandwich category of gourmet dining.Opposite the galley is an enclosed head raised well above the cabin floor because of the deeply V-shaped hull, but there's ample room to use the Sanipottie portable toilet.Without steps to the hinged windshield section, getting to the bow is difficult, since you're using the passenger footrest and grab rail shelf for climbing. Once on the flat foredeck, there's a pair of low hand rails along each side, but only the center of the deck has any non-slip, which poses the interesting choice of having either sure footing or sure handholds, but not both. The hand rails, both fore and aft, have integrated cleats for a stylish and usable design, and there's an anchor locker forward. Aft, the molded transom swim platform has a hidden ladder and easy steps to the sun pad.Engine access is excellent, with a hydraulic ram lifting the entire sunpad. On our test boat, the pair of liter V-8s (/220 prop horsepower) were neatly installed with ample room for plug changes and most maintenance. The engine compartment was very tidy, with white gelcoat covering the interior and neatly organized wiring and plumbing. The batteries were easy to reach, with room for up to four in a bank. All in all, construction and finish were top-notch and the mold work was clean and crisp. I was impressed not just with the oversized stringers supporting the engines and stiffening the hull, but with the sheer number of stringers: 5 rather than the usual 3.Underway, however, is when she really shines. The twin Volvos rumbled nicely to give an indication of the power under the driver's hand and shoving a fistful of throttles forward gives a satisfying sense of accelerationHandling is just what you'd expect from a deep-V performance boat. Normal wakes and swells flashed underneath without notice, eradicated by the shock-absorbing hull. Bigger waves just meant tickling the drives and tabs to find a comfortable groove, and then nodding gently along as the boat cleaves each sea. Like most deep-Vs, likes to run straight so it takes serious steering input to roll into a turn but, once the wheel is cranked over, the boat banks solidly inwards with no trace of cavitation from the DuoProp drives under the stern. If you want to get up into the white knuckle realm, you can check off the optional twin MerCruiser 502s on the option sheet, putting 830 combined horses under your trembling right hand and upping the speed ante considerably by doubling our test boat's 440 horsepower.
