Diesel-Powered Bayliner 2858 Command Bridge; 1987
Trailerable, 28 ft. flying bridge cruiser, w/ classic teakwood interior
This recent conversion uses a turbo-charged 6.5L, V-8 diesel with later model 6.5L block (larger cooling passages, high pressure oil pump) by AM General. Originally marinized by Marine Power of Ponchatoula, LA, this engine is rated at 230 HP, and can be further upgraded to 300 HP if desired with addition of an intercooler. This engine is rated at 12.7 gph at w.o.t., and pushes the boat to 30 mph at current power rating. Sterndrive is a Mercruiser Bravo 3X Diesel with 1.81/1 gearing . A set of 22 pitch and a set of 24 pitch props are included. At 1100 ft. above sea level, in the fresh water of Lake Mead, AZ, the 24 pitch was a bit too steep. At sea level, in Raritan Bay, NJ salt water, the 22 pitch was a bit too shallow. Depending on ultimate homeport location, further prop testing may be advisable.
Originally from Lake Michigan, this hull has been stripped, epoxy-barrier-coated with 7 layers of Interlux 2000, and covered by 2 coats of Pettit Hydrocoat Anti-Fouling. There were a few minor gouges in the bottom gelcoat, as one might expect on a hull of this age. Those imperfections were properly repaired. There was absolutely no evidence of any hull blistering, as the photos will show. Above the waterline, gelcoat has been recently buffed and waxed and is in excellent condition. Stainless brightwork has been polished. Interior has had new carpeting, and a much needed color change from the originally repulsive pink and purple, to a more reasonable beige and navy blue.
Purchased new in 2007, trailer is a Venture, aluminum, triple axle, with surge disc brakes. Tires are in excellent condition, with about 3500 miles wear. Take this one-of-a-kind boat offshore to find the big fish, or sail it up the inside passage to Alaska, or do the great circle route from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes on the Inter-Coastal and the Erie Canal. When you want to move this boat, it tows easily behind a full size pickup with a big block or diesel engine.
Seller can arrange delivery anywhere in lower 48 states, and will cooperate with any buyers in any other locations as to shipping and documentation.
Boat is located in Meadview, Arizona, USA, (zipcode 86444), and is available for inspection and sea trials for qualified buyers. Meadview is about 100 miles from the Las Vegas, Nevada airport, on the southeast shore of Lake Mead, just about where the Grand Canyon ends, and the lake begins.
