12 foot Chaisson Sailing Tender
This type boat originally designed and built in the 1800s by Joe and George Chaisson in the north shore towns of Massachussetts, i.e. Marblehead, Swampscott, the Chaisson dory was a beamy, round sided boat with a great capacity well suited for fishermen who had to bring their catch in through the heavy surf. These dories had their narrow transoms shortened and widened to accommodate yachtsmen as yacht tenders..typically built with 5 lapstrake planks and a flat bottom
First published in National Fisherman magazine in 1977, these plans can be found in the Dory Book by John Gardner of Mystic, Connecticut.
This sailing dinghy was professionally built sometime in the 1980s.I do not know who the builder was.. and is 11-8 overall with a 52 beam, and draws 5 with the centerboard up. 25 with the board down, and the rudder draws 20
The sailing rig stores easily in the boat. The mast is 10-6 (17-6 with the sail raised) and the boom is 10 ft. It has an almost new Nathaniel Wilson sail (gunter rig) that is approximately 90 sq.ft. The sailing rig, i.e. spars, are original to boat and have several (6-8) new coats of varnish.
The boat is planked with white cedar copper riveted on white oak steam bent ribs. . I have replaced the following: the transom is quartersawn red oak as it was originally, the transom knee and inner and outer stem are white oak as is the rudder . The oak bilge keels at the flat bottom have been replaced (good beaching boat)
I have put in a new lead weighted centerboard, painted with anti-fouling paint. As noted above, the stem and transom are new the planking is original. The centerboard trunk has been restored also.
New spanish cedar duck boards for the boat to keep feet dry.
All fasteners are copper and bronze with some stainless steel used when necessary during renovation.
Pettit products were used for all painting and varnishing. Epoxy paint on hull interior and polyurethane on the exterior hull.
A great, classic yacht tender that rows and sails well
