This is your likely "once in a lifetime" or at least "once in a decade" opportunity to get a Carver 500 in structurally good condition for less than $90,000. We are launching a new Coral Reef Restoration and Protection Organization called CORAL FORESTS, and trying to free up money on a hard deadline to purchase a 57 foot expedition sailing vessel (which we have under contract with a large deposit and a final payment deadline). This small ship we are trying to purchase in part with auction proceeds from this Carver 500 will eventually cruise the worlds oceans mapping the deep water coral forests in partnership with the coral reef and fishery mapping technology of MAREGroup and to travel to remote island nations such as Vanuatu, The Phillipines, French Polynesia, Fiji, and Tonga (where we have oceanfront property purchased already just meters away from endangered coral reefs) to hold training workshops to teach how to build coral nurseries and re-plant dying coral reefs using the methods developed by Coral Restoration Foundation.
The one catch is that in order to meet our contracted deadline for the purchase of our Expedition and Research Ketch Sailboat we have to require payment in full within 24 hours after close of the auction, so as part and parcel of the terms of the auction, please be prepared to respect these auction terms.

I've hired two different diesel mechanics to assess the condition of the engines. Both feel fairly confident that they could be re-built as they show no salt flavor or seawater in the oil. However they were underwater as you can see in the engine photo, and rebuilding motors this large is still a fairly costly prospect. So if you intend to just live aboard and do snorkel and restaurant trips rather than serious long distance cruising, the most economical option for re-powering would be to mount a heavy duty stainless dual motor bracket on the transom (available for about $500) and get a cheap 30' or so classifieds board boat with twin 80 or 100 hp or so outboard motors and mount those motors on this boat.
That would enable you to cruise at 7 to 10 knots trawler/sailor speed but not the full 20 knots these vessels were designed to cruise at for longer passages. Other than re-powering, what this boat needs is just an interior remodel the same as you would with a flipper real-estate investment. This boat should really be viewed as floating real estate. It is as large inside as a small land condo, and totals about 700 sq ft total of living area inside, which is about three times the size of the interior of the average 40 foot cruising sailboat. Built in the United States by American workers to quality marine specifications, These are the only boats built and widely available that have both the two full staterooms plus crew cabin, vast interior living room, two bathrooms each with standing showers (one tub/shower) and the huge enclosed glass sun-room and solidly constructed and fully enclosed fly-bridge with forward and pilot position leather seating. Nearly every other 45 to 55 foot power yacht has "at most" a canvas enclosed fly-bridge. These two additional Glass and Fiberglass enclosed rooms on this model add immensely to the usable interior space of these very comfortable and sought after yachts.

If you cannot afford at least $30K up frot you probably should not be considering purchasing a vessel of this scale. Dockage, operating and maintenance fees escalate considerably with such a large vessel. This is not a "playing around" weekend boat. This is a serious floating home as considerable in scale as a land home and equally valuable once fully restored.
But like re-modelling any house, this will take many weeks of work to complete all the aspects of a full restoration, and most of it is basically all the same work as remodeling a land based home--carpentry, plumbing, electrical and painting. If you can remodel a land home to save $100k on the purchase price then you can do the same with this yacht. However, if you aren't that handy and you want something turn-key, you should probably consider getting a loan for the additional $100,000 price difference and purchase one of these that is ready to go. There are a number of them for sale on the web between $150,000 to $250,000. Just google "Carver 500 for sale" to check them out.

ACCORDING TO THE RULES OF THE HARBOR YOU SHOULD STAY ON YOUR BOAT FREQUENTLY TO KEEP AN EYE ON IT AND ALSO GET AN OUTBOARD MOTOR AND MOTOR BRACKET MOUNTED SO THE BOAT CAN MOVE UNDER ITS OWN POWER. I CAN HELP YOU UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS OF GETTING THAT DONE OR HIRING SOMEONE LIKE MY FRIEND TO GET A 100hp OR LARGER MOTOR MOUNTED ON THE BACK WITH CONTROLS AT THE HELM. THERE ARE WAYS TO GET A DECENT OUTBOARD MOTOR THAT WOULD MOVE THE BOAT AND HAVE IT INSTALLED FOR PRETTY CHEAP, BUT YOU SHOULD STILL AT LEAST BUDGET $2000 TO $4000 TO GET A MOTOR MOUNTED OF SUFFICIENT HORSEPOWER TO MOVE THE BOAT. THE MORE YOU SPEND THE NEWER AND LARGER THE MOTOR(S) WILL BE OBVIOUSLY, BUT UNLESS YOU WANT TO DO A HAUL-OUT AND STORE THE VESSEL ON LAND, (WHICH IS THE BEST IDEA IF YOU AREN'T PLANNING TO LIVE ON IT RIGHT AWAY) THEN YOU SHOULD PLAN TO SPEND AT LEAST A FEW THOUSAND MORE TO GET ONE OR TWO OUTBOARD MOTORS MOUNTED TO BE FULLY COMPLIANT WITH LOCAL MOORING RULES.
The town mooring field at Marathon in the lower Keys where the boat is currently, or the mooring field at Key West, where I was planning on moving it to, also require at least one monthly pump out of the holding tank at a cost of $5 whether you have used the toilet on the boat or not. Boat currently has electronic flushing toilets which won't work till you get a set of new batteries and likely new electric pump motors. However, you could switch out for a manual flush marine toilet which can be had from Don's Marine Salvage in Clearwater Florida for about $150 or $200, or set up one of of the camping style ones with the removable small holding tank to dump into a toilet on shore. But even if you don't use the on-board holding tank, mooring field rules require the $5 per month pump out, which you will appreciate as a boater because it is what makes the water of the Florida Keys now clear aquamarine water pleasant for swimming, where 20 years ago before those policies were enacted, local waters were much more polluted by boat waste than they are today.

Are the engines in running order at all at this point? Needing to be re-built and not running is a subtle difference.
I am asking because this is the perfect boat that I am looking for, but I'm a retiring Navy Chief headed to the Tampa Bay area and would need to get it up there, preferably prior to any major overhaul as I can/have/will be doing 99% of the work myself. Obviously, it is going to be much easier if it can get there under it's own power and then I start the rehab up there.
