1946 Carver Charles Carter Custom Made Hydroplane Mahogany Wood Racing BoatThis is a rare opportunity to own a piece of boating history and a real treasure for any serious boat collector. This boat was custom built in 1946 by Charles Carter, co-founder of Carver Boats, before he founded Carver Boats. This boat was completely restored with no expenses spared and no detail left unattended. For example, in preparing the boat for painting, we completely stripped off all the original paint and dug out every screw and re-tightened them prior to painting. There was no dry rot on the entire boat, so it was not necessary to replace any of the mahogany plywood. The boat was painted top, bottom, and inside to a high professional level. The bottom of the boat is just as nice as the top.The motor and components were treated likewise. We disassembled the engine, cleaned and checked all components, and reassembled it with new seals and gaskets. We rebuilt the starter, carburetors, auxiliary oil pump, and replaced the wiring with all new, period correct cloth-covered wiring. The dual temperature gauges and the oil and fuel pressure gauges were professionally restored. It has all new pulleys and steering cables. And it has a new battery and wiring. The engineering and technology on this 70 year-old wood boat is intriguing. All the knowledge they had back then for modifying a Ford Flathead can be found on this engine. It retains its original Ford Flathead V8-60, vintage Edelbrock dual intake, finned aluminum heads, Offenhauser water intakes, and 12-volt Mallory ignition. The motor was installed in reverse so that the drive shaft is running off the front of the engine and in a direct line from the drive shaft to the propeller. There is a hand air pump on the cowl to pressurize the tank and supply fuel to the carburetors. Interestingly, the hand-formed gas tank has Boeing inscribed on the tanks filler neck. It has a combination dry sump and drip system. Theres a 12-volt electric gear driven pump that feeds oil from the pan to the reserve tank and back to the engine. It has a kill switch to shut off the power. The water pressure to make the speedometer functional is collected by a small brass wing on the bottom of the propeller support. Notice the speedometer starts at 50 mph!The upholstery was designed so it could be easily removed for cleaning. The surround around the cockpit can be unscrewed and lifted out in one piece. Also the tuck-and-roll paneling on each side can be removed easily to access the battery and steering cables. The seat was reupholstered to match the rest of the upholstery and can be removed with four screws. The trailer started out as a brand new trailer but was totally modified to fit the style and shape of this boat. It has Indian motorcycle fenders that were widened by 2 inches, which can be removed with two bolts. We installed step plates on the fenders and on the rear of the trailer. It has 15-inch wheels and 6/70/15 wide whites with flipper hub caps. The tail lights are 1939 Ford blue dots with chrome conduit wiring. The front of the trailer features a swing-away tongue with a custom made boot for show. The front storage compartment was installed to conceal the jack and designed to follow the lines of the boat. The flying mermaid on the front is from a 1930 Dodge Brothers Water Car. If you look closely, youll see that it resembles a boat. Bumped out the sheet metal so the wings would fit flush. Charlie Carter was an airplane enthusiast who throughout his career built, fixed, flew, and sold airplanes. He started his career as a mechanic at Bell Aircraft in Buffalo, NY. From an early age Charlie also had a fascination with boats, and he loved to race a wide variety of watercraft as a hobby. These experiences no doubt played a role in the design and construction of this racing boat that he engineered. In the 40s he ran a Chris Craft agency, and he built two marinas in Green Bay and the Fox Valley. In 1953 Charles Carter and George Verhaven started Carver Boat Company (now Marquis Yachts of Pulaski, WI), which specialized in building high quality mahogany-planked high-speed runabouts. In the last year, I had the good fortune to talk to Charlie about this boat. His recollection was vivid, and he filled me in on a lot of details. In the water, Charlie said this boat goes over 80 mph!
