1988 Bayliner 3218 32ft Motoryacht. The vessel is powered by twin US Marine Corp. marinized 305 engines. Engines are mated with Hurth marine transmissions. These are basic Chevy/GM 305 Cubic Inch motors, 165 HP, that have been converted to marine engines. They are freshwater cooled to increase cooling ability while keeping the possibility of internal corrosion low. The exhaust risers are steel and not stainless so they are a maintenance item. They appear to be in serviceable condition and show no signs that they need to be replaced to be used. The port engine has a newer starter, distributor, and plug wires. Possibly due to a leak, being that its all replaced it stands to reason the leak has been repaired as well. The drive shaft stuffing boxes appear serviceable. There is a small drip on both shafts which is to be expected on this type of shaft seal system as well as staining from salt water leak. While it is unsightly it is normal. (no drip indicates packing is too tight and will fail to heat, too fast of a leak indicates the packing should be changed or adjusted.) Rudder Shafts and packing appear to be in good condition, better than would be expected for this age boat, however the cockpit help station is missing and hoses are bagged. With no indication of how it is tied off, I did not test the steering as to not cause a hydraulic leak in the cabin. The shore power had failed and the dockmaster informed me it was disconnected to protect the boat, however this left the batteries off of the charger and I could not start the motors. However I had enough power to get the starboard motor to crank and I believe it will start. The port did not have enough power to crank. This verifies only the starboard is not seized, How ever I saw no signs that the port had an problems. Both engines had clear dark oil, indicating fairly new oil with little hours since the last service.
The electronics consist only of a Hunninbird 581 HD DI Fishfinder and a Uniden VHF radio. The 581 HD DI is a black and white LCD unit with down imaging and GPS. It is functional, the mount for it has caps for the plug plus it also has a cover for the mount. Usually these are susceptible to corrosion from the salt air but since the owner utilizes both the caps and cover I saw no signs of corrosion. Also the unit is kept inside and looks new. The VHF unit is functional and I heard traffic and got a radio check from the unit while on the boat. It is DSC capable but it is not set up on the unit so a new owner could set up DSC with out having to transfer an existing number. I didn't not test the stereo and all other equipment needed shore power which was not available. The was a radar antenna on the radar arch but I found no radar. The Navigation lights did function but the horn did not, it may not have had enough battery power to function. This vessel also comes equip with a stove, refrigeratorand microwave that the donor states are in working order but again with no shore powerI could not verify.
The overall condition of the hull was as expected for a vessel of this age. No visible or obvious signs of damage. Gelcoat was dull and in line with a vessel of this age. The interior of the boat was dated but in good shape for its age. As with the exterior, I saw no visible or obvious signs of damage. Just typical signs of ware for its age. Waterline and trim tabs had marine growth on it which should be cleaned before use but it is nothing that would prevent the boat from moving under its own power. The cockpit engine hatches were the only part of the deck or flooring system that I noticed any flexing which is normal on these older boats. The cockpit had a Magma grill which was used but had a cover and appeared to be in serviceable condition.
