1955 Aristo Craft Torpedo 14 Boat
1957 Mercury Mark 55e motor (40hp, electric start)
1961 Bilt Well Tilt Trailer
Boat; The Torpedo has had a lite restoration. It has all the original wood and seat
vinyl. The outside has been striped down to the bare wood, than sanded
stained and varnished. The bottom was sanded and repainted with yellow
Rust-oleum paint. (thats what aristo craft told me to use) The windshield and
bow handle where replaced with exact replacement parts from Aristo craft.
These boats are still being made by the grandsons of the man who started
the business. You should check out there web site. The steering is brass cable
style, it has aluminum cable guides so it can run thru the hull sides. I made
the matching cable guide ends. The bottom had a few bumps and nicks over
the years. (see pictures ) It has a strip of fiberglass matting along the rear
edge of the hull and transom, it was tight so I left it there. The 12 volt battery
is mounted in the rear in an old Bat-ri Box. I did install a battery shut-off
switch. The gas tank is steel and in very good condition it is strapped down in
the rear. It also has a dust cover.
Motor; The Mercury Mark 55e is 40hp, it came from the state of Michigan. I dont
think it was ever used in salt water. It had good compression in all cyliners.
I installed new points, spark plugs, timing belt, water pump, seals in the
lower unit, rebuilt carbs and fuel pump. It was stripped down and
repainted with new decals and then clear coated. It has a matching
Quicksilver dual lever controller with key start. It has a three bladed brass
prop and drives the boat nicely.
Trailer; The trailer is a 1961 and was made by Bilt Well. It has new wheel bearings,
tires and rims with a spare mounted on the trailer. This is an original tilt
trailer. (notice the two ball couplers ) It was sanded down and repainted.
The boat guide bars are my doing so I can see the trailer without the boat
on it when backing down the ramp, they can be removed if you want.
The boat was finished for a little over two years and we only used it in lakes. I dont get to use it as much as I would like too. I built this unit like I build all my projects, like I was keeping it forever. It is a lot of fun when we take it out. I have even towed it behind my street rod and went to car shows. People love to see a wood boat at car shows. The last time in was in water was about a year ago. Last week I ran it in a run tank for ten min. It sounds good, but that being said it is being sold AS IS.
They still build these boats new but theres not a lot of the old ones left.
Thank You.
Questions
Is this boat still available
I just happened on this email you wrote a few months ago. Just to answer you. I still have the Torpedo. I did take it off the market for sale. I'm not sure, I might be putting it back up for sale? I had sold a Typhoon also before.
Thanks Bob
I the boat of my dreams!
Is this posting from the year 2006 or is it current (2022)?
