Who is she?This 1951,eighteen-foot, Penn Yan President, HIN WR5167, Model MRMU, runabout is poweredby her original, freshly-rebuilt, inboard Gray Marine Phantom SIX-112,dual-carb flathead, six-cylinder engine, No. F5387. The engine drives a singlepropeller via a forward/reverse transmission and a Penn Yan Stern Engine Drive System.The engine has approximately 6 hours runtime since being rebuilt in March 2020.
We bought this1951 President in 2018 from her second owner, who was then living in Watertown,Connecticut. As is detailed below, this boat is now factory fresh following acomprehensive structural, cosmetic, and mechanical preservation process thatwas completed in March of 2020. With only minor wood repairs to her stem duringthat process, her hull is well over 95 percent original. Her Chinese red paintand upholstery matches the original color (PANTONE 18-1663 TPX) precisely.
IndependentMarine Survey:Certified Marine Surveyor, Captain Stan Walker, Walker Marine Services, completed a comprehensive,independent marine survey on April 1, 2020. On Page 10, Captain Walker awardedher an OVERALL MARINE RATING of Bristol ++, an estimated market value at$36,500, and a replacement cost at $50,000. (pp. 8-10).

Her featuresinclude a three-row cockpit with OEM-matching Chinese Red Russaloid upholstery,varnished ceilings, new amidships gas tank, two-piece windscreen, chromehardware, cast bronze transom safety strut, Chinese red bottom and flooring;and a color-matching, custom-built, 5,334 Lb. GVRW single-axle LoadmasterTrailer Co. Ltd. trailer that is fitted with an extended bow stop and electricdisc brakes.
For safety, sheis fitted with an exact replica of her original gasoline tank, a Fireboy-XintexMA2 Clean Agent HFC-227 automatic fire suppression system, and a new SHURFLOWbilge blower and automatic bilge pump.
A SHURFLO Raw Water Strainer and manual water inletcut-off protects her raw water-cooling system from getting clogged with foreignmatter, and greatly simplifies winterization.
The ensign wasreplaced, but everything else is as it was the day she left the Penn Yan, NYfactory in 1951: hardware, lighting, brass fire extinguisher and driveline.Only her distinctive, Penn-Yan-correct, Chinese-red Russaloid upholstery andher ensign were replaced. She is currently registered in Vermont.
Once detailedhull measurements had been taken and it had been lofted, the Loadmaster TrailerCo., Ltd of Port Clinton, OH, custom-built her one-off, single-axle, 5,334 LBGVRW trailer with electric brakes. It is finished in matching Chinese redpaint. The trailer is currently registered in Maine.

The stern enginearrangement used by Penn Yan was (introduced in) 1932 and enjoyed greatacceptance by all who owned such boats. Each Penn Yan inboard came equippedwith a safety strut which was one piece bronze casting attached to the transomcarrying both the prop shaft and rudder stock. It was so rugged it could hardlybe destroyed
It has theeffect of boat length behind the motor without hull buoyancy in that position,and that produced running characteristics that were hard to believe.
A Penn Yaninboard could make the tightest turns, either way with a perfect gravitybank. There was no skidding whatsoever. Running downwind in a heavy sea willfind a Penn Yan inboard being able to run wide open because it is light in thebow and heavy in the stern. (Bob Speltz, TheReal Runabouts VI, pp. 213-14)

Just lettingyou know, Star Buzz Martin, the former owner of Martin Marine, passed awaySaturday at the age of 95.
Mr. Martinstarted the business in Painted Post, NY in 1946 after coming home from thewar.
He sold PennYan boats and Mercury motors up to his closing when the shop was destroyed by aflood in 1972. At one point he was the largest retailer of Penn Yan boats servingthe Finger Lakes of NY.
Your Presidenthas a Martin Marine Buzz Martin burgee, with its solid color, star in thecenter and no other markings.
What thattells me is that (this) President was first sold to her original owner(s) byBuzz at Martin Marine in Painted Post, NY, in 1951.
