This will probably be the most interesting and unusual boat listing on classifieds board in some time. Please read on. I know its long, but worth its reading it all. I am selling my 1976 Invader Elite ski and fishing boat. It was bought new by my dad and has been used mainly by myself the entire time for skiing and fishing. I have legally owned it since 1992, but it has been in my possession almost all of the time since it was purchased. I have clear title to the boat, trailer, and the 5 HP Mercury outboard, which I purchased new in 2002. You will not see many one owner (family) boats of this vintage. The boat has current registration with Texas Parks and Wildlife and trailer has current registration with Texas Dept of Motor Vehicles.
I worked in a boat and marine shop when I was younger, so keep this in mind when I talk about the maintenance that has been done to the boat. The boat is 16 feet, and it has a 140 HP Mercruiser inboard outboard stern drive. I have replaced the exhaust manifold and also put in a plastic 20 gallon gas tank to replace the old metal tank. It has a relatively new fuel pump, water pump, belts, hoses and carburetor. I put in a new bell housing assembly, with new bellows a few years ago in the upper unit. It has two Optima batteries with a multiple position battery switch. It has full instrumentation, with speedometer, tach, ammeter, oil pressure, water temperature, and vacuum gauges. I added an oil pressure warning light, lower unit water pressure gauge, a second water temperature gauge, a voltmeter and hour meter. The hour meter was added on back in the 90's, so this is not the original hours on the engine. I added a second automatic bilge pump in addition to the manual pump that also works fine. I also added an alarm which sounds if the bilge fills up with water. I loved gauges and gadgets back in my younger days, so I filled up the dash with them. The stern unit has its own up/down indicator gauge. It has two fire extinguishers, mirror, lights and horn to make it legal. A small anchor and life jackets are included. Speaking of life jackets, also included are 3 automatic inflatable life jackets (Bass Pro Shops MD3087 XP).
The reason the engine is so reliable is that it is the older 181 cubic inch GM 4 cylinder engine with NO electronic fuel injection and it has the older coil and points and condenser (remember those!). These engines just keep running and running. Plus, most anyone with normal engine mechanical skills can work on these engines, no need to take it to a dealer. This has been a very reliable engine.
The boat has been garage kept since it was bought new! The seat upholstery is in good shape. There are no major cuts or tears, just normal wear. One thing that does need to be replaced is the original carpet. Not bad after 38 years, but that tells you one thing, this boat has been taken care of. But you will not be out any money in that I have already bought a nice replacement carpet and adhesive so that all you have to do is pull the seats (about 20 screws) and cut and lay down the new carpet. It comes with a newer Bimini top that I installed. It seats 6, not counting the open bow seating, 900 pounds for persons, 1310 pounds for persons and gear per the USGC certification plate. Since it was garage kept, it does not have a full cover.
The fiberglass does show some signs of normal wear, there are a few small fiberglass dings where the boat has bumped up against the dock. The hull has been painted with fiberglass paint. If you really wanted to detail the hull, it would need to be repainted and sanded. The red decorative fiberglass shows some flaking due to age. That said, the fiberglass hull is functional with no holes or serious damage. I did repair a small fiberglass fracture in the front bow seating area as seen in one of the pictures. Someone a little too heavy jumped from the dock into the boat. Also, I put in a reinforcing 1x2 to support an area of the flooring that probably should have been reinforced at the factory. Its for below the flooring storage.
It has an electric variable speed Minn Kota MK55 stern drive trolling motor that is attached to the drive unit. The remote is at the driver dash with variable reverse, neutral and forward. The drive/propeller unit is out of the water when the boat is on plane, and in the water during slow/idle speed. You can turn off the main engine and engage the trolling motor to quietly navigate in and around trees and stumps while fishing. You steer it with the steering wheel, as it is mounted on the lower drive unit of the outdrive. It is easily removable, if necessary, so you can garage the boat, if the boat/trailer is too long.
It comes with a nice VHF Icom marine radio IC-M504, antenna, and it includes the owners manual. It has a Garman Fishfinder 400C with color screen mounted next to the drivers side. It has multiple functions including depth, depth alarm, water temperature, and battery voltage among other functions. Mounted on the passengers side is a Hummingbird 798ci Side Imaging HD sonar. This is a very nice unit I bought new in 2012. You need to Google what all it can do. I still have the box and CD (I printed off the instruction manual). Finally there is a AM/FM CD player with speakers.
It also comes with a 5 HP Mercury outboard two stroke trolling motor, which I bought new in 2002. It comes with both an internal gas tank and an external 3 gallon tank and hose. I actually got the motor mount and 5 HP outboard just in case a catastrophic failure of the engine or lower unit took place. I believe in having a back up, being an ex LEO. Remember, it is an older boat. I have never needed to use it, although I do run it periodically just to exercise the engine. It probably has less than 15 hours on it. Just for your information, you could probably go several miles just using the electric trolling motor, depending on weather conditions. Also included is a wheeled outboard motor stand for this outboard, a brand new full carburetor ($200+), and water pump kit. It also has the original owners manual, complete parts manual and service manual.
The trailer is a 1978 Sportsman (the original trailer had a defect) with practically brand new tires and a spare tire with lock. I recently put in new races, bearings and seals and they are in good shape. Although useable, the wooden guides and bunk boards need new carpet. Again, you will not be out any money, I have both the carpet and material to recover them. All of the lights work. It uses a 4 prong connector, but included is the newer round connector to fit the newer trucks. The accessories you will get with the trailer will be extra new bearing seals, extra new races and extra new bearings for the trailer. I also have extra lights for the trailer, because as you know, they occasionally go bad being under water. So, years down the line, you are set to overhaul the trailer if you so desire, with no extra cost to you. It requires a 2 inch ball, with a height of about 22 inches above ground for towing.
What is the most remarkable part of this auction is that over the past 38 years, I have bought MANY new Mercruiser parts for this engine and drive, so that if anything ever went wrong, I ould have them at my disposal. I realized that as the engine was getting older, it might be difficult in obtaining parts, so I picked them up over the years. In the past 3 decades, I have acquired quite an inventory of spare parts for this engine and drive unit, probably more than any local dealer would have for this engine and drive! You get it all. Just the inventory of the Mercruiser parts is worth WELL OVER $1000. Two MAJOR items you will get is a brand new Mercruiser exhaust manifold (part #96705A1). This part does fail over time, and although the engine is running fine now, many years down the line it may need to be replaced. Not a problem. You have one. It costs over $700! Next is a COMPLETE Mercruiser lower gear housing assembly (part #1623-4110A6). This includes basically the entire lower half of the stern drive unit, brand new, cost over $1400 at parts store! Both of these are Mercruiser brand, not some generic knock off brand.
In addition to the above, you will get several lower unit water pump kits, points, condensers, distributer caps, fuel pump (new), fuel pump repair kit, a new upper drive unit universal joint assembly ($600+), an extra distributor (used), an extra carburetor (used), coil, wiring, gauges, plugs, hoses, wiring harness, many specialized screws, nuts, bolts, lower unit oil, filters, and truly too many items to list. Just take a look at the pictures of all of the parts! I have the factory owners manual, factory parts manual, factory repair manual, the Clymer repair manual and the Seloc repair manual, and much other paper work concerning the repair of the engine and drive unit. I even have the original brochure on the Invader series of boats and Mercruiser brochure. Plus, I have a wheeled lower drive unit stand (see picture) so it's easy to work on the lower unit when removed from the boat. I also have the Mercruiser tools to align the motor when removing the entire drive unit and the bellows clamp.
I think you can see the TLC its been getting. I can say with reasonably certainty that you will not find the total package that you will be getting with this auction with any other used boat here on classifieds board. The reason Im finally selling it is that I no longer have the time or energy to take it out. It is an older boat, but it has never let me down. The reason I never sold it and bought a new one was there never was a reason to do so. This boat did everything I wanted it to do. And have you priced new boats? Wow! This would make a great ski or fishing boat. Yes, it is an older boat, but you will get a tremendous number of accessories that you wouldnt get on a lot of other used boats for sale on classifieds board. Its NOT a project boat, its ready to go. Just the Mercruiser parts OR the electronics would be worth the starting price of $1000. Please dont ask me to part anything out. I know I could make a lot more money if I parted out the parts, electronics, and boat separately, but this auction is for everything.
