One of only 11 wood deck Hondo built and probably the only one still owned by original owner/builder. Ordered in late 1969 and delivered at end of the year as a 1970 model.
Built for racing with all the best parts available. Including Casale vee drive, 1350 shaft, K-monel prop shaft, Stellings 2 blade. All Casselli steel strut, rudder and fin. Finish line Cav plate hardware.
Russell SS tanks, Jones tach, SW gauges. Joe Factor bolts. Custom installation hardware machined by owner. Custom tandem trailer built real low for high speed towing.
Raced originally with 440 BBC and Weber carbs it ran 100 mph in quarter. Then in 1971 ran with a blown 468 blown gas engine and turned 124mph.
From then on it was just used for skiing and fun, but rarely as I was off racing other things.
Not run since 1996. I restored everything in 2015/16. At that time I even freshened up the engine that had but 3 hours since new.
I'm an engine builder and machinist I don't do wood, I screwed up on the deck and the epoxy cracked.
I learned a hard lesson. I now give up.
The engine is a 516 inch BBC and makes about the same power as did the old blown 468. It has the same gear and prop so should be 125mph ride. Note: the cavatation plate was adjusted by Ray Casselli himself and he tried it two or three times to get it right. I've never touched that adjustment in all these years. Who could do better?
If you add up cost of items at market price the hull is free!
Engine is not included but can be had with hull for added fee
Engine: Mk 4 bow tie block bored to 4.530, decked, honed, oil passages blended, drain back smoothed etc. ARP studs, 4340 crank and rods w/ARP bolts. Manly forged pistons, JE rings,
.Dart 320 CNC ported heads w/ 2.3x1.9 valves. Comp cams solid roller cam and lifters, Crower custom length push rods, Crower SS rockers on ARP studs. Crane springs and retainers, ARP head studs. Roller chain and Neovane cam driven pump. Aviaid custom oil pan with Milodon cooler, SS hoses. Patterson SS double walled headers ($10,000) Tunnel ram with 2X 625 AFB carbs. Mallory ignition. Morse linkage with custom progressive action. Sanger pedal.
Engine built and dynoed in my own shop. At the time with a single 850 carb it made 689 HP.
But was flowing 950 CFM and pulling vacuum so it needed more carb area. I haven't run it on the dyno or anyplace else since putting the new intake. Well over 700 now.
