Please read this listing carefully. Everything I know about this boat is listed here, but I will try to answer any questions as best I can.I
am listing this vessel as a project boat. As best as I can tell, the boat was kept in Norfolk Virginia until the previous owner
purchased it in March 1988. Around 2005 he fell ill and after
many years of fighting the illness, he recently lost his battle. The
boat was left to his spouse who knew very little details involving
the boat except that they kept it near Deltaville Virginia and it was
primarily used in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The marina owner offered assistance in helping to sell the boat after the owner passed away. I was told
about the boat from a friend who knows the marina owner and he
thought I might want the engines and generator as spares for my other
boat. You can go to web page ( hatterasowners.com/Brochures/31EC/31ECBG-1176.pdf ) and view the brochure that Hatteras issued for this boat. It lists everything that was offered to a buyer along with the options and prices for everything. It also shows the exact floor plan of this boat.
I did purchase the boat for the engines and generator and after having it hauled out of the water and cleaned it up a little, I felt it would be a waste to strip this boat at this point. Overall it is in too good of shape. Hatteras boats are known for their quality and stability and this boat is no exception. It is in remarkably great condition for having sat in the water mostly unused for the past 7 or 8 years. Details are listed below, but I will mention that the engines fired up and we moved the boat under its own power to a different slip before it was hauled out. I have researched this model using what little paperwork I got with it and the following is what I have found out.
You are looking at a classic Hatteras 31 Express. This model was only produced in 1975 and 76. As best I can determine, this hull was produced in 1975 for the 1976 year model. It is an all fiberglass hull and appears to be in excellent condition. This boat does have the optional flybridge with dual control stations which is seen in the pics.
Originally this boat came with twin Mercruiser 454's 350hp each. The boat now has twin PowerCraft Marine 454's which were installed, I was told, in 1988 shortly after it was purchased. I can't confirm when the repower was done or what the horsepower rating is on the engines though. Both engines run, but will need to be tuned up. For the short time they were running to move the boat they seemed to sound good. The starboard engine needs an alternator and the port engine left riser has a hole right where the rubber eshaust hose clamps to it allowing water and exhaust to spray out. Internally these engines are fresh water cooled and have antifreeze in them.
The transmissions are Borg-Warner velvet drives and appear to be working properly. This is a direct tunnel drive configuation not a V-Drive. The props are bronze made by Michigan Wheel and will need to either be reconditioned or replaced.
The generator is an Onan FirstMate 2.5. I have not tried to run it, but it does turn over.
There is a windlass that is not working. I have not done any tests on wires to determine a cause.
I had shore power hooked up and the lights all appear to work inside and out. The electrial outlets work. The refrigerator sounds like it comes on, but it did not appear to be cooling. The current fridge is not the original and I have no way to know when this one was put in. There is a two burner electic stove, but I have not checked it. The boat is equiped with heat/ac and a water heater. I do not know if they are working properly.
The interior needs wood work under the windows and near the sink. The windows had been left cracked open for ventilation, I am guessing, and much of the wood has rotted below them. This includes the support for the upper bunk behind the sofa. I would say all the windows will need to be recalked due to age. The floors are solid throughout except right in front of the sink where there is a soft spot. The interior upholstery is in good condition, but needs a good cleaning as does everything else. The exterior seats on the main deck need repair, but the seat on the flybridge is in good condition. The fighting chairs are in good condition.
The boat has been registered with the Coast Guard, but the documentation is expired.
There is no trailer.
The boat is located in Deltaville Virginia. It is out of the water and can be inspected in person if desired.
This boat is being sold as-is where-is with the complete understanding that it is being sold as a project with no warranties offered or implied.
Buyer is responsible for having the boat transported to desired location. Temporary storage arrangements can be made with the marina where the boat is currently located if needed.
Questions
Sir,
I saw the add on Boats-from-USA.com. Is this boat still available? I live up in Lovettsville VA (up near Harper's Ferry) and have been looking for a project boat. Thank you for the detailed description. Agree that it sounds too good to strip and scrap. Not worried about the interior or the wiring - plan to re-do all of that anyway. Just wanted to confirm that you did not see any blistering on the hull or punky spots in the deck, and that the major mechanical was OK (I believe these have hydraulic steering).
I am currently on a temporary work assignment in Shanghai China, and will not be back to get a trailer and pick it up for about 6 months, so I would need to leave it at the marina until then. Do you see any issues with that?
Thanks,
Steve
