You are bidding on a 2014 Formula 310 BR with only 130 hours of use. This beautiful 310 comes to us in "LIKE NEW" condition, with zero cosmetic flaws. Not even the bottom of the boat has a single scratch on it. This is a rare boat becasue of the fact that it was ordered with upgraded Volvo Penta 380's withJoystick Control. This package from the factory with this horsepower alone is 20,000.00!! Add in the other options like the Volvo Penta OCEANX Anti Corrosion System valued at over 5,000.00 alone, and you have onespecial boat! Folk's this particular Formula, has all the right upgraded options to set her apart from the rest of the boats in her class. Most 310's are powered with 350 M.P.I.'s with only 300hp. Not only is this particular factory package the best in CLASS, these newer Formula 310's are a supply and demand type item. Meaning that this is a hard to find boat, not only with these options, but throughout the market..... Period! Later model Formulas are nottypically traded in this early. Please see our attached Factory options sheet for the Value, and Upgrades... This Boat is LOADED!
The Formula 310 Bowrider has more going for her than just lots of seating capacity up front. She is a large watersports platform which can be used from stem to stern as the photo above demonstrates. What really sets Formula apart from virtually all other boats in class is her superb execution of even the smallest detail. It is all done with artistry, sophisticated materials, lots of TLC and man-hours.Volvo Penta Anti-Corrosion SystemOutdrives are not without their problems. For one thing, with just one look you can see that the power generated by the engine has to take a fairly tortuous route before it gets to the propeller(s). Add to that the fact that outdrives operate in water, and in a lot of cases, saltwater, and you can see that there is a potential for trouble. Some of the worst culprits are corrosion, water intrusion, bellows degradation and maintaining the drive oil. But theres good news. The engineers at Volvo Penta have developed the OceanX which solves or controls most of these problems. It does that by dealing with lower unit challenges before they become problems. And as far as corrosion goes, its newest alloy and coatings have slowed it to a snails pace. Lets take a closer look at the components and features that make this lower unit the state-of-art outdrive on the market.

YesVolvo Penta OceanX Captain's ReportNot only is the new OceanX outdrive attractively designed, but its engineered for the long haul.First the BasicsLets start at the very beginning. A stern drive outdrive is the same as your outboard's lower unit. Only this time the drive is connected to an engine inside the boat, instead of one attached above hanging on the transom. Its the drive portion that is outside the boat, hence the term "outdrive." It also goes by the ame stern drive, as it's attached to the stern of the boat, or inboard/outboard (I/O"), as part of the system is inside the boat (the engine) and part outside (the outdrive). Theyre all the same thing described by different words but the long and the short of it is this is where all the power of the engine gets transferred to the water to propel your boat.Problem #1So what sort of problems do these units have and how does the OceanX solve them? First of all, its important to note that nothing in the marine world, it seems, is without its problems. Stern drives have been on our boats for years and they get the job done. But so does your computer, and does it ever have problems? Of course, but its the price we pay and we all do what we can to deal with the inherent problems. The rubber bellows are an Achilles heel in any stern drive lower unit.
For starters, the most plaguing problem is with the bellows system. Where the outdrive connects to the transom of your boat, there are rubber bellows, much like an accordion, that keep water out of the universal joint gimbals, while still allowing the drive unit itself to pivot back and forth as it steers your boat. So whats the problem? These things are made out of rubber, and rubber is not exactly an indestructible material. Quite the contrary, rubber dries out, cracks and it punctures easily. But its the most appropriate material we have and, again, we must deal with the problems. Without a lot of TLC, after a number of years, the bellows will crack, start to open up, and then water will get in. Water and universal joint gimbals do not get along, especially when salt enters the equation. You normally solve the problem by replacing the bellows periodically which requires hauling the boat and removing the drive. Otherwise, the only way to tell that you have water intrusion is to haul the boat, remove the outdrive and inspect the gimbals. This is a very costly procedure and aggravating if nothing is wrong. The Volvo Penta SolutionWouldnt it be nice if the drive itself let us know if we had a problem? Thats what the team at Volvo Penta asked and go figure, they answered yes, it would! The OceanX solution is to add a sensor to the gimbals to detect if there is any water intrusion through the bellows and alert you before you start to have parts fail. Gone are the premature haul outs to check if maybe you have a problem and gone are the rusted gimbals failing at the worst possible time. It may not look like much, but this little gem is the water intrusion sensor mounted to the gimbal inside the bellows. Its job is to save you money.Problem #2Now to be sure, the gearing inside an outdrive takes a fairly tortuous route as the power makes its way from the engine to the propellers, with no less than two 90-degree turns and lots of room for failure along the way. This sensitive area is largely immersed in water, so again we have a potential water intrusion problem. Thus its important that these parts all get their fair share of lubrication. Thats where the drive oil comes in. Contaminated oil will quickly lose its viscosity (thickness) and fail to continue lubricating these critical components. In addition, the water (particularly saltwater) will quickly corrode and wear away the gearing. The OceanX SolutionAgain, sensors are the key. Volvo Penta has fitted the drive gear case with a sensor that not only detects when water contaminates the oil, but it also alerts the operator to a low oil condition. Weve seen this work in practice in our tests of the drive system and its inarguably a huge leap forward. Both the bellows sensor and the drive oil sensor are firsts in the industry not a surprising claim to fame for Volvo Penta (which first introduced the stern drive in 1957). Here is a view of the drive oil sensor mounted in the gear case. It alerts the skipper to a low oil level as well as water contamination.Problem #3We still have the problem of metal components in a harsh saltwater environment. That means corrosion. Anyone who has ever spent time on the water, or even around a dock, will recognize the familiar images of a corroded outdrive. It isnt pretty or cheap. Not only is the harsh saltwater a critical offender to metal, but galvanic corrosion-- metal deterioration from electrical currents -- is just as damaging. And then there is the matter of corrosion. The OceanX SolutionHere, Volvo Penta went on a full frontal attack. They start with an electro-deposition treatment. This is based on the fundamental physics principle that opposites attract. The metal parts are charged with direct current and then immersed in a bath that has oppositely charged particles in it. This allows every corner, crack, and crevice to have a continuous even coating over the entire surface of the part. But the real kicker is the coating itself. Volvo Penta uses a titanium-ceramic coating for exceptional corrosion protection. Its flexible, so less prone to flaking and chipping off. Now all that is well and good while in the showroom or on a new boat. But the question on our minds is -- what happens when it gets scratched? Now youve removed the coating and exposed the bare metal, right? Wrong. Volvo actually tested this in four parts of the globe by immersing intentionally damaged drives into warm salt water and tested the differences. The results were outstanding, they tell us. The outcome of the tests shows a 400 500% improvement with the new treatment, resulting in less corrosion creep from the scratched surface according to Volvo engineers. Now there are also sacrificial anodes -- zincs -- that come into play. You have them in your engine, and theyre also attached to the drives. Their job is to deteriorate before other metal components do. They sacrifice themselves for the greater good. We looked at the test above and asked what would happen if the zincs were eaten away and you didnt notice? Now you have a significant reduction in protection, right? Again, we were wrong. Here you can see visible differences in a scratched surface that was subjected to corrosive salt water over time in photos supplied to us by Volvo Penta. On the left, corrosion is able to creep into the scratched surface and expand the damaged area. On the right, the corrosion is kept to a minimum and barely affects the scratched surface at all. The folks at Volvo Penta tell us that the improved metal components in the OceanX outdrive will offer substantial corrosion protection beyond the competition. They back that statement up with their in-house testing and have provided us with photos of the results. These photos were supplied by Volvo Penta. Volvo Penta is so confident in their new OceanX product that itis backing the OceanX with a four-year limited warranty against corrosion! We like companies that put their money where their mouth is.Other Notable Facts About the OceanXHere are some other tidbits we discovered during our tests--
- The OceanX drive weight is 200 lbs. (90.9 kgs.), and it has a trim/ tilt range from -5 degrees to +52 degrees.
- Prop sizes range from F2 to F9, which have average pitches of 18.5" to 29.5".
- Gear ratios for the OceanX are 1.78, 1.95 and 2.14. The 8.1L engine only uses the 1.78, the small block V8s can use any of the ratios -- it's boat speed dependent. The Formula 310 BR with a pair of Volvo Penta 5.7 Gis that we tested the OceanX outdrives on had the 1.78 ratio.
- The unit has maintenance-free gimbal bearing and u-joints.
- All exhaust is passed through the drive lower unit into the water. Volvo Penta doesn't allow exhaust to escape from the exhaust bellows. (Look for this feature in competing outdrives when you comparison shop).
- Power steering is standard.
- The trim pump is integrated and sealed in the transom shield. This dramatically eliminates corrosion problems for the trim pump.
- There are two anodes on the drive and shield, and the drve anode can be replaced while the boat is in the water.
- Propellers are installed with rubber bushings to reduce vibrations and protect drive components.
- There are no water inlets on the front face of the drive. This is a great feature for those who like to beach their boats or run in very shallow water. You won't have issues with sucking in sand and debris. (This is another rare feature to look for in competing brands).
- Integrated pitot tube in the lower unit for your speedo. You wont have to drill into your hull to attach a speed sensing device.
- No shift cable bellows. Weve seen a history of these parts failing and it can easily sink boats from time to time.

Formula 310 Bowrider (2014-) Captain's Report
With multiple color options the boring white on white is a thing of the past. The optional radar arch really adds to her utility without harming her striking good looks.Mission StatementThe mission of the 310 Bowrider couldnt be more clear. Shes the second largest bowrider by Formula offered and will satiate the desires of those that have no intention of spending the night onboard, but do plan on spending the days on the water with a boatload of friends. She has the amenities, space and good looks to impress virtually all comers.Entertaining.By having forward-facing seating for 8 adults, underway they can all enjoy the thrill of boating at high speed and see where they are going in comfort. When cruising more slowly, or when at rest, she can easily seat 14 people in comfort -- as many as most pontoon boats.Watersports.She is also watersports capable and able to get on plane relatively fast to pull skiers. Her 10,792 lbs. (4,895 kg) as tested will help create wake that wakeboarders will enjoy. She is about as big as is relatively easy to handle for these kind of activities.Razzle-Dazzle 'em.Her final -- and usually unmentioned mission, as alluded to above, is the "wow 'em" with her sheer beauty, grace and eye-dazzling finish.Distinguishing FeaturesStrong Warranty.Formula stands behind its products with a 10-year structural warranty and a 5-year transferable "Formula Guard" protection plan. This plan includes engine and outdrives for five years.Choice of Graphics. Most builders have a one-and-done policy regarding graphic choices. Not so with Formula. There are three different choices so that the 310 Bowrider can be dialed in to the specific look that owners are striving for.Imron Graphics.Definitely a feature that separates Formula Boats from the rest of the pack. Look at nearly any boat in the marina closely. Notice the graphics are applied with a decal. Formula paints the graphics on, and not with just any paint. Here were talking Imron, one of the highest quality paints on the market, and its as durable as a paint can be. Certainly far more durable than the decal counterparts.DuPont ChromaPremier Paint.Formula uses this high-quality paint that has a bright luster, then covers it with DuPont Imron clear coat for durability and longevity of high gloss. (Option). $4,385.00Polished to Perfection.Formulas are always easy to spot among the throng of boats. Theyre the ones that look far and away better than the rest. On our tour of the Decatur, Indiana plant, we paused at the end of the line to watch a boat being finished out. No less than four workers were at the hull with orbital buffers bringing out the perfect shine. When one of them stepped back to admire her work, we joined in and looked at the mirror-like shine. We saw no flaws or imperfections in the reflection.Excellent Tooling.Formula knows that much of its premium reputation is because of the exceptional cosmetic nature of its hulls. Look at any Formula hull at a boat show and notice the play of light across the surface. Their hulls do not reflect light in waves much less as a washboard. The reason is because the plugs were board sanded for hundreds of hours. Then the molds have been maintained and polished to maintain the fairness of the plugs.Major Standard FeaturesSingle Level Deck. The deck maintains a single level from the cockpit to the bow, no steps, and this keeps everyone on the same conversational level as well as making transitions back and forth much easier.Concealed Fiberglass Anchor Locker. This creates a cleaner, and more uncluttered bow.Eight Formula Cast Cleats. The cleats have the Formula logo cast into them.Air Horn.We would have expected a basic electric horn on a bowrider, but an air horn is a step above.Bennett Trim Tabs.Formula has chosen to stick with the tried-and-proven hydraulic trim tabs and has not gone with the newer, less expensive electric ones. These are standard and include LED indicators to the sides.Polished Stainless Steel Engine Vents.Where we often see chromed plastic vents that peel over time, these vents not only look good, theyre durable.Extended Integrated Swim Platform.Choice of Helm Panel Materials.Choose between a silver burl or a wood and brushed metallic finish. The steering wheel hub matches the panel choice.All-Weather Cockpit Seating.Wet seat cushions are not much fun. But that will not be going on in a Formula boat because its cushions are made with DriFast foam that allows water to flow right through to drain holes underneath. This foam does not hold water. And they are made to withstand the elements.Molded Wet Bar.It includes an integrated sink, Corian counters, a 24-quart (27.7 L) igloo cooler, trash container and safety rail.Doublewide Helm and Companion Seats. At the helm we can have a second set of eyes looking ahead, the companion seats face the helm and theres integrated dive tank storage underneath.Modular Bow Seating.Converts easily to a sun pad with dedicated storage for the filler cushion under the starboard seats.Standard Head.Formula provides a standard VacuFlush head with 36-gallon (136 L) holding tank and dockside pumpout.Bow and Cockpit Covers.Very surprising to see this as a standard feature but Formula apparently doesnt want to run the risk of a short-sighted owner failing to cover this premium boat. These arent giveaways either theyre color matched, and made from non-fading Sunbrella acrylic fabric with SeaMark and vinyl undercoating.Automatic Discharge Engine Room Fire Extinguisher.Another item typically seen as an option but one wed never want to be without. There is also a standard fume alarm in the engine room. Formula also includes a separate extinguisher mounted in the cockpit.
