Summary:
For sale is a 1971 Donzi Classic 18 2+3. This is a no-excuses, 6.3L 7000 rpm, 400HP SBC performance boat. This boathas been fully restored by DJMarine from the tip of the stringers to the heavy duty Bravo One outdrive. All wiring was meticulouslydone with high-grade marine wire and high-quality drivetrain/enginecomponents, built forlongevity and reliability in mind.Structure:
All wood was removed from this boat. The hull washand massaged to ensure no fiberglass delamination or damage and new Duratec primer and gelcoat applied. New hardwood stringers were epoxied into place and extended further into the front of the boat for added support. Additionally, lateral hull supports were structurally added every 12 inches along the stringers to create superior torsional rigidity needed to even better manage very rough water. The entire inner structure was wrapped with structural fiberglass/resin. The transom was also replaced with marine-grade plywood andintegrated into the longitudinal trusses for added strength and covered in structural fiberglass. Finally, the completed hull was coated in marine-grade, coast guard approved foam for flotation (something the boat did not have from the factory).Exterior/Interior/Chassis:
This is a 1971 fiberglass boat, and as such has inherent imperfections in fiberglass processing that are not observed in todays boats. The entire interior is all newhand sewn seating materials, including new marine-gradewood seat bases. The floor is new snap-in two piece flag blue carpet. As was done in the factory, the cockpit is attached to the stringers, but instead of a fiberglass attachment (that has to be cut to raise the deck), the cockpit is secured to two 2x4" aluminum 3/16" wall aluminum tubes through bolts under the seat pedestals. This was done to make deck removal simple (if needed) and added structural performance.
This boat has a full set of Livorsi gauges you would expect from a top-end performance boat, including a GPS-based speedometer. The Clarion CMD 8 stereo provides an equally strong stereo system with iPhone controls,a Clarion external marine amplifier with Kicker 2-way 8" marine speakers.
The original 27 gallon fuel tank is replaced with a custom-built BestFab 56-gallon fuel tank, providing all-day maximum performance without refueling. Refueling was changed from a single center-deck entry to a dual port and starboard fills for convenience and removing the need to crawl on the deck to fill!
The deck has all new gelcoat with a new 2-part Interlux flag blue stripe. A white cockpit cover is supported horizontallyand hasa matching (vinyl) flag blue stripe through it aligned and matching the hull. The engine hood is the original hood with a foam insert and fiberglassed over to acceptthe higher "X-point" on the driveline to minimize outdrive drag. There will be anew carbon-fiber hood (being built from the hood in the picture)available as an option and at an additional cost (hood now being formed). The outdrive skagwas extended slightly to provide additional stability at high speed. Bennett trim tabs also provide additional stability and dynamic performance.Powertrain:
The engine was built by JB Engines and is estimated at over 400hp. The block was meticulously machined inside to enable easy oil flow over casting edges to accelerate oil return to the pan. It base is a SBC Mercruiser based 5.7L with all forged internals (crank and rods) bored 0.060inch (equivalent 6.3L, 388 cubic inches) and built with Wiseco light-weight pistons with file-fit rings, Clevite bearings all packaged inside a "oil splash-resistant" shield and 8-quart Canton Racing pan. Oil pressure is provided by a high-pressure oil pump. The engine was line bored and balanced for great high-speed performance and generates a 10:1 compression ratio. The forged GM crank was splayed for higher-RPM operation - and while that increased range is not always used, it created a very strong lower end for possible addition of an air-charged system. The Comp cam was selected to carry full torque through the 5500 rpm range while enabling a stable (but with intimidating sound)idle quality. The L31 Vortec heads were reworked with beehive valve springs and coupled to a full-roller/rocker valvetrain. The intake air passes through a 770 Marine Holley dual-feed carburetor and an Edelbrock 7516 air-gap manifold.
The engine pushes torque and power into a Bravo outdrive with an external cooler for high-speed use. Spark is provided through a complete MSD 6M-2L Marine Ignition Control System (coil, controller, distributor and rev limiter ignition system. Top speed is prop-limited atGPS-based 65 mph and has "gobs"midrange torque with two passengers and a full tank. This boat has many more functional features, but these are the important performance-related attributes. This boat sits on a standard bunk trailer and has a new axle, tires and bearing buddies for the long haul. This boat alwayssits either sit in a heated garage or on the boat hoist under a canopy.
