Boat builders have been making bowriders for many decades now. Occasionally youll see a new wrinkle here or there, but the basic template doesnt seem to vary too much. That is, unless youve seen the Cobalt 296, which turns a new page in the bowrider story.Unique FactorThe designers at Cobalt looked at how other bowrider seating was laid out and basically tossed it out the window. Its as if they moved the indoors outside and have created a motorized alfresco sitting parlor. In the stern are designer pillows, affixed by tracks, clad in all-weather Sunbrella material to yield a casual look usually only seen in salons. In one available layout, instead of the usual U-lounge setup, the driver and co-pilot have flippable backrests that provide double-wide seats when the crew faces forward. With the backrests flipped forward, they become rearward recliners with roomy storage bins underneath. Our test boat has an optional wet bar behind the captains seat that eliminates the starboard recliner, but the symmetry of twin convertible seats has a look and function thats hard to beat. Forward, the look is unique with a wrap-around lounge that partially circles the bow section, but in front of the captain is a feet-on-the-floor, forward-facing seat. The upholstery is Bentley-esque with a hand-sewn, double-stitched two-tone look.

HandlingConditions during our sea trial largely resembled those youd find on a large lake, on your day off. Yep, it always happens: You stare out of your office window (people who can afford a big Cobalt dont usually work in cubicles), and all week long its calmer than Gandhi on Valium. But on the morning you plan to go boating, the first sound you hear when you wake up is the wind howling. With 22 degrees of deadrise at the stern and a progressive deadrise hull thats an ultra-sharp, near-60 degrees at the entry, we chose a midrange cruise speed of 35 mph and cleanly sliced and diced our way through the steep 2-plus-footers in style. We could drop down to 15 mph or so by using the Lenco trim tabs and still stay on plane when conditions worsened. Occasionally we launched off a larger wave and slammed home, listening for rattles that werent there. The great ride wasnt too surprising since this Kevlar-reinforced hull design has been identified by J.D. Power and Associates as having the best ride in a mid-sized runabout. Cobalt also won top honors from JD P&A for having the fewest number of owner issues every year since its been giving out the award. Adding to passenger peace of mind is the very high gunwale, perfect for parents of smaller kids who always want to ride up front. However, the gunwale is not flat, so it would be nice to see a patch of nonskid for grip while standing on it to board from the side.

Best UsesDespite its more than 30-foot length (with the extended, swimmer- friendly stern platform), the 296s nimble handling makes this a very serviceable jumbo wakeboard boat. It has a standard ski pylon that inserts into the upper stern deck into a receiver thats covered when not in use. For tubers, theres even a standard air compressor with holder. This Cobalts primary mission is day cruising, and it excels with standard features such as the six-speaker MP3 stereo with an option for two more speakers on the transom for those hanging on the stern rumble seat or taking a dip. In addition to the cockpit recliner(s) theres a pair of stern lounges for parents keeping an eye on wimmers. Families with young kids will love the roomy head compartment complete with Corian countertops, a stainless steel sink and a standard pumpout Porta Potti. Good luck prying the captains hands off the leather-wrapped, real wood wheel that goes beautifully with the rosewood trim option. Our boat has an optional Garmin GPS color display flush mounted front and center, which complements the clean gauge and push-button accessory array.

What is Axius? Axius is a sterndrive package that uses twin, independently articulating MerCruiser Bravo Three sterndrives to provide joystock docking. Additionally, its Digital Throttle and Shift and Electronic/Hydraulic steering system make piloting a larger boat simple and intuitive. Axius-powered boats can move laterally, at an angle, forward, backward and even turn in a circle on its axis all with a simple touch of a joystick.

Axius utilizes traditional sterndrives that, because of their ability to move independently, deliver performance well beyond that of traditional sterndrive- powered boats. Sterndrives are well known for their performance benefits compared to traditional inboards or pod drive systems and Axius increases that advantage.

Axius is especially attractive to boat builders because it doesnt require modifications to boat hulls, and the only visible modification is the addition of the joystick and a small control pad at the helm
