Its designer said the 202 Stinger is a 20 foot, sleekly profiled mini-offshore cruiser designed for both comfort and speed. We wanted to develop a boat with the style, flair and performance or our highly successful 222 Stinger, but which would sell at a much lower price, explained Jim Douglass, who designed the new 202 Stinger. What we came up with is a high performance, stylish boat with great flair and soft riding qualities a dealer can put out the door for around $17,000 or less. We feel we have developed a boat which reflects a sporty personality in the water, but which is priced at the entry-level cost, Douglass said. The 202 Stinger is tooled and rigged at Murray Chris-Crafts plant in Goshen, IN. Don Greene, the factorys production engineer, said several engines were tested on the boat before engineers settled on four offerings: the 175 hp MerCruiser, the 175 OMC, the 205 hp MerCruiser or OMC 205 Cobra. Greene said he can travel 50 mph with two people aboard in his 202 Stinger, which is equipped with the 175 hp MerCruiser. Douglasss boat at Chris-Craft headquarters in Bradenton, FL, is fitted with a 205 hp MerCruiser and can do 60 mph. The 202 Stinger is strictly a sport and ski boat. Its hull has a sharp entry forward, with lots of rake which flows aft smoothly into moderately hard chines. Douglass said the 202 Stinger is very fast out of the hole. His boat is up and planing in seconds. But for all its performance, Douglass said, the boat is remarkably economical to run. It seats three people abreast, like an ocean racing boat; the helmsman in the middle, flanked by the navigator and throttleman. Chris-Crafts experience in the power boat racing world has convinced its engineers that this is the position which provides the greatest stability and the best control of the boat. Among the 202s standard features is an automatic bilge pump, welded stainless steel bow rail, full stainless deck cleats, coaming pads, a fully carpeted interior, tilted steering wheel, and removable storage box. A heavy duty towing eye is mounted in the center of the transom. Two swim step are molded in on the stern, and each has its own grab bar. The boats three occupants sit in luxuriously furnished comfort. The boat has no windshield, But Douglass has invented a clever cowling which is just high enough to deflect the wind from the crews eyes. It doesnt break up the sleek outline of this racy sportboat like a true windshield would. The 202 Stinger is offered in five color combinations. For Murray Chris-Craft, which builds 68 different models ranging from 17 to 58 feet and in prices from $4,800 to $1 million, the sporty new Stinger 202 is a fun new offering bound to attract the attention of go-fast enthusiasts.
