For sale is a 1994 Chaparral 2550 SX Cuddy Cabin boat. We are the second owner, and have had it since 2009, its always been trailered, never used in salt water. It has been maintained and is currently registered and has clean title (both boat and trailer). We enjoyed it very much while our boys were home. We pulled two tubes (a lot!) and occasionally two skiers. This boat pulls two skiers up with no difficulty. The V-hull carves very nicely. Chaparral has a reputation for building quality boats with great hull designs. You can see from the photographs that this boat has been well cared for. The colors on the hull are still deep and shine nicely. The upholstery is clean and still soft. There are a couple of minor imperfections on the engine cover upholstery; a small crack and a small spot that looks like maybe someone burned it with a cigarette. But we never smoked in it, and when we purchased it, the previous owners didnt smoke either. We love the boat, but just dont use it any longer, and two boys in college
It has an integrated swim platform where we mounted the ski pole, which is easily removable. We took it off after every outing and stowed it, it takes only a couple of minutes. The swim platform also has a fold-up ladder, which needs a couple of mounting bolts replaced.
When the boat was new, it had through hull exhaust, and the owner didnt like the loud sound, so he converted it to through-prop exhaust. I converted it back to through-hull exhaust and it sounds great to me! So, I still have te parts needed to have it either way, its a simple conversion.
The water pump on this model engine is mounted on the motor and is belt-driven, making it very easily changed. I made a habit of changing the impeller every three years, the last time was last year, along with a new fuel pump.
Be advised, this boat weighs about 4,400 lbs. empty, so you wont be pulling this off the boat ramp with a small SUVit needs a truck. And although I did hand crank it on the trailer when I first got it, I soon purchased a powerwinch, which it comes with. Also comes with a power trailer tongue jack, which is handy. The trailer is a galvanized E-Z Roller, dual axle. Ive kept the sealed wheel bearings greased well.
Ive done all the maintenance on this boat, since my family used to own a marina and Im well familiar with these boats. In fact, the marina used to be a Chaparral dealership which is why I sought one out when we looked for a boat. I removed the outdrive every fall season in order to lubricate the outdrive universal joint, and then stored the outdrive indoors during the winter.
A couple of small issues;
The surge brakes on the trailer have not worked since I bought it. We never drove far, and I pull it with a Ford F350 that can easily handle it, so you should decide if you want to get the brakes working.
Last time out I noticed an ignition miss in the engine on one cylinder. I found that one of the spark plug wires has worn through and was visibly arcing on the exhaust manifold. I purchased the replacement set of wires, but have not yet installed them.
There is a small oil leak in the port side valve cover gasket that leaks very very slightly, only enough to drip a bit on the exhaust manifold, which creates small amount of blue smoke at higher speeds. Low speed it doesnt leak. Replacing valve cover gaskets is an easy task. I only found this because I ran it with the engine cover removed, so I could find that ignition problem. The smoke isnt even noticeable with the engine cover on.
Starting this engine is dependable, but the Weber carburetor requires some cranking. The fuel, for some reason, evaporates out of the bowl, so when you start it after sitting a week or more, you have to crank it enough to fill the carburetor bowl. It has never been a problem, just requires more cranking than you might expect. It still starts every time, and it wont cause a problem if you anchor or sit at the beach for hours, only after a week or more you have to crank it for maybe fifteen seconds or so. Google Weber carburetor hard starting and youll see. I just want to be completely honest about this quirk.
The mooring cover will need to be replaced soon. Its in decent shape, but getting a bit old.
The ceiling fabric in the cabin has, over the years, acquired some small spots of mildew staining. Weve always cleaned it, but mildew stains on fabric are near impossible to remove.
This a very solid boat with a lot of life and good times left in it.
We are located in central Virginia, about 25 minutes south of Richmond, VA just a couple miles off Interstate 95 (easy!).
