1960 CENTURY RESORTER 16' RUNABOUT
CLASSIC WOODY SKI BOAT CONVERTED TO DUAL-COCKPIT STYLING
NO RESERVE - YOU BID, YOU WIN!
On offer isa classic Century woody runabout as were used at Busch & Cypress Gardens in the 1960s. These were typically tasked with pulling multiple skiers up to 11-person pyramids! The V8 has the guts to get even very heavy skiers right up on the skis with no fuss. We personally pulled 4 skiers at a time on several occasions with no trouble at all getting up on the plane. Seats 6 persons comfortably. Boat has not been in salt water at least since it was totally overhauled and hull glassed (maybe never).
HULL & STRUCTURE -Original wooden hull & most strakes still intact, but with some rot. Hull has been glassed over in the past. I had the bottom re-done by chopper gun, never properly sanded and painted, has one bad patch that needs to be re-worked (although it only leaked very little when last used). Transom is in poor shape but doesn't affect general use. Outer lower gunwale trims (wake reducers) have been removed, I still have the metal outer trim for those; upper gunwale trims are still in place.
I had a carpenter build a complete new topside with dual cockpit layout and gull-wing engine bay doors. Framing was never quite right and needs revision on aft end of engine bay uprights to be sturdy. Topside is decked with decent marine plywood. Expensive Red Mahogany perimeter planks are badly sunburned, MIGHT be salvageable if you have patience. I had originally overlaid the plywood with beaded oak paneling and it looked quite nice; could be an option for a quick resto/furb to get on the water before summer is over.
INTERIOR & CONTROLS -Dashboard is new, with all original meters, also have a few spare original meters (all are somewhat faded). Original steering wheel, throttle & shifter; shifter linkage was modified and needs rework to be secure. Light switch and horn button are simple automotive retrofit pieces. I modified a set of Chevy mid-size station wagon seats and they worked rather well, but have seen 5 hard seasons, then 10 years sitting. It's not total trash, but would need seatcovers at a minimum. Cockpit decking and gunwales are marine plywood, partial and unfinished.
TRIM -All trim included, some age-related blemishes and general wear.Nose fin trim has been dinged and damaged, but still looks fair.Nose cap is in good shape.Intake scoops, bow lights, forward chrome flag mast and aft wooden flagpole with "Century" banner, (3 of 4) topside rubber step pads with chrome trim rings, ladder frame with partial steps, air scoop assy, aft vent trim V logo, original gas cap, cleats, ski ring with brass shaft and base, and fore & aft rope eyelets with brass shafts & bases included. Photos show what is installed, and one photo of original restoration shows what it all looks like when assembled.
Prop shaft packing assembly needs the base in the hull properly reworked and secured, but we ran it with minimal leakage (small Atwood bilge pump kept up just fine). Rudder has had an extension welded on to increase control, but has since been dinged. Prop is a bit dinged and scarred.
Original windshield frame and broken plexi windshield included. Also, second used windshield (neither installed). Single 6-gallon portable fuel tank included, accommodates dual tanks.
All original engine mounts are sound and complete.
NO ANCHOR, NO OARS, NO FIRE EXTINGUISHER, NO LIFE JACKETS, NO ROPES, NO DOCK BUMPERS, NO BATTERY, NO MIRROR, NO SHADE TOP.
WIRING & ELECTRICAL - Hand-wired with no color-coding, individually fused circuits. Main lighting worked, horn worked, bilge pump worked. No bilge pump included. I never wired the instrument lights.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION -Ford 292 V8 was overhauled right before I acquired the boat. It has a Mallory dual-point dust-proof distributor, and Holley 600 4-barrel vacuum secondary carburetor. Barr marine manifolds. Velvet Drive transmission was rebuilt by Texoma Marine in 2007 and has not been used (installed and proper rotation direction set, but never run). I installed a new AutoZone alternator that only has two seasons on it. Starter & carb were overhauled with only one season on them (although carb should be overhauled due to stale fuel). Engine will start and run at the moment, but carb needs proper cleaning, and engine needs an oil change (transmission is dry since overhaul).
TRAILER - Standard single-axle trailer with 2" ball receiver. Has roller uprights on aft end, hand winch in decent shape, parking jack needs overhaul. Uses Ford wheels, tires are old. I do not believe trailer has ever been in salt water.
OTHER -Clean Texas boat title in my name, no trailer title. Will include collection of Century boat club magazines. I believe anyone with reasonable mechanical skills can have this boat on the water with less than 10 hours' work. I think another 20 hours of hard work could have it looking like the example photo.
