Description:
You are looking at a 1978 Boston Whaler boat on trailer with 40 HP Mercury. I sold it a couple weeks ago on classifieds board, but a few minutes upon the auction closing, the buyer wrote me a message he did not want to purchase due to a financial issue. So, we are offering it again. I bought this to fix up and resell, which I am doing. I'm not normally a boat guy, but took this on because the boat has so much potential. Here is what is going on:
- The boat is located in Oak Ridge, NJ, 07438 and is pick up only.
- The boat is a 1978. The paint on the bottom is worn. There are screw holes where past owners had rod holders and accessories, and there is one small chip I noticed on the front and another on the top rail. These are silicone fixes unless you want to get crazy.
- I removed all mechanicals and teak wood and sanded off all the old varnish and finished all the teak with Teak Oil. The front hatch door was plywood and I fabricated a new one custom from teak wood. The wood looks great.
- While the wood and controls were off, I power washed the entire boat. It cleaned up well. I noticed one of the stainless tee fittings on the rail was cracked. It is JB Welded and holds fine, but is a future fix if you want to do it.
- I put the boat back together the way it was when I got it. The steering works and everything is mounted the way it was when I bought it a month ago.
- I did not test the fish finder, bilge switch, or navigation switch. I don't know if any of these work or not.
- The engine is a 1989 Mercury 40 HP Oil Injected 2 stroke. This means it has an oil container that automatically mixes the fuel and oil. I filled it with a fresh gallon of Quicksilver oil (made by Mercury). I removed and cleaned the spark plugs that were in it. I charged the battery that was in it. I hooked up the water to the muffs and the engine fired up. I have a video of the engine running, but don't know how to post it. I only ran it for a moment because it is not spitting water. The impellar (water pump) likely needs to be replaced from sitting 4 years. Prop will run fine as is, but the aluminum has a chip out of it.
- The trailer is a 2002 Valu-Line and the tires are dry and cracked. It will need new tires.
- The cover is shot. It's good for keeping dust off, but that's about it. I keep it in case someone will want it for a template to make a new one.
- I have accessories. There are ropes, anchor, fuel tanks, battery, fluids, light, and the stuff you see in the photo.
- Most important: I'm not a boat guy! You will likely need to work on this boat. I am going to assume, based on my research, that at a minimum you will want to remove the lower unit of the motor and replace the oil and the water pump parts. Boston Whaler boats are collectible! This is a beautiful 13 foot boat for someone to enjoy. It's small enough to park in your garage. I'm sure it hums once this 40 hp motor is tuned up. I was told the boat sat for 4 years outside in NJ. Keep that in mind, please, and do not expect to drop it in the water and go fishing. I need to sell this boat to someone that wants an oldie, but goodie, and knows the basics to complete the process of getting this boat back on the water.
- It has to be picked up in Oak Ridge, NJ, 07438. I have a title for the boat signed by the last owner and ready to hand over. I have the trailer registered to me. I can give you my registration and a bill of sale, which is all we need in NJ for trailers.
- I don't know how far you can go on the current trailer tires. They are crackly, but do hold air.
- Expect to pay me in $100 bills. I'm old school and appreciate it. I have tons of feedback and am happy to make the exchange at the police station if need be to make you feel safe.
- I am only taking a $100 deposit at the end of the auction. After that, we can set up an appointment to get you the boat and you can pay the balance.
