1984 28 Bayliner Contessa with 1985 Easy-Loader Trailer and new electric winch
Ready to go and priced reduced.
This boat has been extensively refurbished and upgraded in the last few years for sport fishing on Lake Superior and cruising. Its in turn-key condition and requires only topping off of the fuel tank then using it for the entire season.
Consider that most all boats of this vintage need a list of things done to make them the way they should be which runs into a bit of money. This boat is ready to go so dont make the mistake of comparing old, tired boats to this one.
The boat was winterized which included fogging the engine, draining all water out of the engine and replacing with minus 100 degree polypropylene antifreeze, draining all water out of the interior water systems, gasoline stabilizer added to fuel, complete engine oil and filter change, and complete servicing of the stern drives.
Upgrades:
4- 1,000 amp/hour batteries new
Electronic ignition (distributors) added to engines
New wiring, belts, and hoses on engines
Engine compression check was very good
Twin 305 Chevy engines used by Volvo and designated Volvo 225s and the sterndrives are Volvo
2- new bilge pumps with automatic switches
Custom presentation aluminum railing fabricated by Eric Schultz of Electro Forge for the fishing cockpit to include rod holders and mounting for downriggers. There are also strategically placed sturdy hand rails for boarding which get high marks from boating guests.
2- aluminum handrails alongside of cabin with fishing pole holders
Mountings for two Cannon 10 magnum downriggers with 40 amp circuit breakers plug-ins.
Garmin 498 GPS-Fish finder mounted at fishing cockpit
Fish Hawk depth-temperature-speed unit mounted at fishing cockpit (This is an expensive and very handy unit for locating temperature zones where fish are)
Aluminum radar arch installed with new VHF antennae mounted (ready for radar installation)
2- Garmin 547xs GPS chart plotter/fishfinders installed (These are sophisticated navigation units with an extra Garmin G2 chip installed for enhanced 3D navigation qualities. Just indicate where youre starting from and where you want to go and the Navigation software plots a course for you with all the waypoints)
Garmin AIS VHF radio operated completely by hand-held units located on the flybridge and at the lower helm (This is a black box item that has the latest capabilities built in. All AIS equipped boats show up on your chart plotter screen and when you transmit, your boat name and position are transmitted. It has built in functions for dealing with MOB and SOS that mark your position. This radio connects to the newly installed hailer (with listening capability) and in addition to hailing others you can program in for things like issuing a fog horn signal every two minutes as required when youre in fog.)
Theres a separate horn controlled from either helm
Remote controlled searchlight
Functioning navigation lights and anchoring light
A new circuit breaker panel has been installed at the lower helm and most 12 volt equipment has been transferred to it. Black boxes are located below the skippers seat at the lower helm for easy access and theres space for future additions. Youll find it easy to add radar.
Theres complete documentation for the boat, Garmin Chart plotters, AIS VHS radio, and Fish Hawk.
Theres an operation and servicing book I put together which includes pre-launch checklist, fuel consumption chart, where everything is located, and procedures for winterization.
Control levers (shifting/throttle) and controlling cables have been replaced with new at both helms.
New battery charger installed
The 129 gallon gas tank has a new sending unit installed.
With proper fuel management this boat has a 200 mile range.
Cabin interior:
The main cabin is surprisingly large meaning tall and big people can move around well everywhere. You can seat six people around the main table.
Technically you can sleep six aboard but practically that number is five as the upper bunk ends up being used to stow luggage, etc. Two can sleep in the forward berth either as two singles or converted to a double. Bed linens and fleece blankets go with the boat and can be found behind the seat back cushions around the dinette.
The dining table drops down so cushions can be added to make it into a double bed. The bench seat opposite the dinette sleeps one and allows the back rest to convert to the upper bunk. The galley has a combination 120 volt AC two burner range and an alcohol stove underneath it. Both work well. The refrigerator/freezer works well and switches automatically between 120 volt AC and 12 volt DC power. For the sink there are both hot and cold water via 12 volt electric pump and the hot water is supplied by a 5 gallon hot water tank. Theres ample space in the drawers and beneath the sink for utensils, plates, and pots & pans. Limited cupboard space works well for storing ups and glasses and there are cup holders located throughout the boat.
The head has a functioning toilet. Note that sanitary hose from the toilet to the 20 gallon tank is new. Theres also a sink and shower.
The forward cabin has a hanging closet and theres a huge amount of storage space in individual compartments accessed by lifting up sleeping cushion hatches. This is where the extra anchor is stowed and its perfect for storage of food and personal gear as it has such easy access.
Storage space is remarkable with cabinets beneath all bench seats, beneath a lower helm floor panel, and in the bilge
Equipment that goes with the boat:
Main anchor mounted on roller bracket on bow has 20 chain and 220 of rope rode. Second anchor stowed beneath the forward v-berth.
8-life jackets plus extra children sizes
Current flares and smoke signal devices, plus signal mirror and orange flag
First aid kit
4- fenders
Many dock lines and various sized lines, more than enough to secure the boat
Boat hooks
Lake Superior maps
American Flag mounted on a pole for placement on the stern rail holder.
This boat has had annual safety checks performed by the Duluth Power Squadron and stickers are displayed on the side window.
The layout of this boat makes it well suited for fishing and cruising. The fly bridge offers a perfect view of everything. The lower helm has excellent visibility and makes it possible to drive the boat from that station while your boating guests sit around the dinette table and you can be part of the conversation. Its worked out well for out-of-town company to go out cruising/fishing then spend the night aboard as they all report a wonderful experience.
This is a great Lake Superior boat and it has excellent sea keeping qualities. Twin engines provide both control and an element of safety.
