WHAT OTHERS SAY
A Different TuneThe Atlantis 38 puts a new spin on its rock n roll predecessor. In these accelerated times, next-generation products are introduced before the previous versions show even a hint of age. Take a spin on the new Atlantis 38 and youll see this first hand, and also get a sense of how boaters can reap the benefits of the trend more pleasurably these days than ever.
Though the name Atlantis Yachts might not be all that familiar to you yet, the brand is actually owned by Azimut-Benetti, the seemingly omnipresent player in serious superyachts and flying-bridge cruisers that created the brand back in 2001 in order to reconnect with its roots..
Theoriginal Atlantis models were existing designs from the Gobbi shipyard, which was taken over prior to the rebranding. New designs were soon fed into the range, none of which made quite the impact of the extraordinary Verve 36, a great-looking dayboat with walkaround decks, three helm seats, two berths, plenty of horsepower, and a unique sideless hardtop that swept back over the cockpit like Jerry Lee Lewiss mop in a headwind.
Ithad rock n roll written all over it, and lived up to the billing. But if the Verve was a boom-time boat, the Atlantis 38 is a product of a leaner era. She is clearly intended to excite the same passions, but with the addition of a more serious, family-oriented side as well. So the cockpit is more conventionalwith seats, sunbeds, and a tableand there are two cabins down below. With a dark-tinted windscreen and those orange cushions she still rocks, of course, but the volume has been turned down because the kids are in bed.
Almosteverywhere you look there is evidence of how much thought has gone into the 38s design. The concertina doors to both the forward cabin and the shower compartment save space in a remarkably simple way. The tabletop needed for the (optional) saloon dinette conversion stows neatly in its own slot in the forward hanging locker. A lifting backrest section in the cockpit cushion is a small but significant addition to the comfort and versatility of the boats seating areas. The entire cockpit sole lifts on a hydraulic ram to reveal the engine compartment, requiring no more preparation than the removal of a small corner cushion. Whoever pulls cooking duties can work in daylight thanks to a glass panel above the galley. The helm seat has a lifting bolster so you can steer either sitting or standing up. And for in-harbor work there is a folding platform to stand on so you can stick your head through the sunroof for the best all-round view.
Suchexamples of practical design are of course de rigueur on boats like this. Space is tight, and style is king. Compromises are compulsorybut the more elegant they are, the better. Just as important to quality of life aboard the Atlantis is the amount of stowage that has been built in, from the useful little oddments tray under a hinged lid on the port side of the cockpit to the practically sized drawers and hanging locker in the forward cabin. Not much space is wasted.
Thesedetails are expensive to incorporate, and in this most cutthroat of market sectors boatbuilders will often be tempted to claw back costs in less obvious areas in the hope that they might not show up amid the smooth talking and spotlights of a boat show. Crucially, I couldnt find any areas onboard the 38 that gave rise to concerns about construction quality. Lifting hatches and peering into hidden corners revealed nothing but carefully clipped wiring, well-run plumbing, and well-finished fiberglass lamination. Up at the bow, the windlass is mounted on a seriously heavy-duty piece of stainless steel that is bolted into place on fiberglass laminates, which are very chunky indeed. It really does look immensely strong.
Atlantisuses an unadorned standards list to keep the price low. The basic boat is ready to go, with a full-size forward berth in a bright and spacious cabin with 6-foot 1-inch headroom (and two inches more in the saloon). There is a very workable aft cabin with excellent headroom in the entrance area, an adequate 2 feet 7 inches of clearance over the berth, and a neat and practical head and galley. The 260-hp diesel stern drives are standard, along with all the instrumentation youll need for weekend cruises. The sturdy cockpit table seats five, and can be lowered to make a sunbed. The 38 is a boat that comes with few frills, but if you want it loaded, from fancier electronics and teak decks all the way up to air-conditioning and a diesel generator, thats up to you.
Ourtest boat had all of that, plus the bigger engines (as does ours). Off Savona, Italy, conditions were perfect, with a moderate swell rolling in, augmented by a light chop on topjust the fun side of challenging for a boat this size. And what fun we had.
With17.5 degrees of deadrise aft and plenty more forward, the 38s hull ironed out the seas with little fuss. The minimum planing speed we managed, around 19 knots, would have been fine for passage-making in these conditions, upwind or down. The only slamming we encountered was deliberate, as we banked off the crests to wrong-foot the hull, but doing so induced no reaks or groans from the structure. We could have carried on all day and the crew would have complained sooner than the boat. Forward sight lines were at times a little marginal: Im around 6 foot and started my test drive by standing at the helm but ended up sitting, to benefit from the height of the seat. In flatter water close inshore this wasnt an issue. Running downwind and across the seas we recorded a two-way average maximum of more than 35 knots. In flat conditions, with more finely tuned leg trim, we might have got a little more. The optimum envelope for fuel-efficient cruising is around 26 to 33 knots.
Volvosexcellent DPH Duoprop sterndrives always give an exciting ride, especially when married to plenty of horsepower. The 38s high-speed turning circle, heeled right over, seemed slightly shorter than its hull length. The steering was light but positive, and we were always in control. Power transmission was virtually instantaneous. Acceleration was lively. The experience was addictive.
Atlantissnew baby proved itself a worthy and slightly more sensible successor to the fabulous Verve, with all the practicalities and comfort of a cruising boat, combined with handling and performance that are seriously fun.Rock and roll!(Alan Harper, Power & Motoryacht Magazine July 2012)

Importing a Boat to Australia
We have some of the best rates for RORO-shipping to Australia in the U.S. and we serve the ports of Brisbane, Adelaide, Port Kembla, Fremantle, and Melbourne. Whether you are a repeat customer or a first-time buyer, heres a few tips and reminders about buying, shipping, and importing boats and yachts to Australia from the U.S.
Finding the right boat.Buying a boat from another country often means dealing with people that you never met or dealt with in the past. Theres tons of free classified ads and Craigs list-type re-advertisers on the internet with deals just too good to be true. If it sounds too good, then, youd guessed it, it probably is a scam.
Do your research. Be realistic. Partner up with a Pro (like us).
We suggest you deal with us. Each week we get shipping, export, and certification inquiries from some of the countrys well respected marine dealers. We work in close cooperation with country-wide brand name retailers such as Marinemax and with the brand stores of Regal, Chaparral, Monterey, Bayliner, Larson just to mention a few.
We are a fully licensed Non Vessel Operating Common Carrier by the Federal Maritime Commission and as such we operate our own in-house shipping company. We have exclusive contracts with some of the largest steamship companies in the world. As one of the rather few NVOCCs we have the authority to buy and resell space on ocean-going cargo ships and issue our own bills of lading. What does this mean for you? As an individual? Well, by contacting us directly you are likely to save considerable time and money by dealing directly with the contract holder (as opposed to a string of middlemen).
Buying a boat directly from us or through our brokerage divisionBoats International, Inc. is our own in-huse discount boat dealership. We buy bulk trade-ins from the big retailers but we also buy from banks and individuals as well. For the past 20+ years our focus have been to absorb distressed inventory and floor-plan boats from cash-strapped dealers and resell these locally and overseas. As we now are completing our store expansion project (September, 2011) we will be able to take on even more inventory then in the past and also have space over to showcase brokerage and consignment boats.
Most of our international buyers rely on our reputation and expertise as a key player on the U.S. domestic and international boat market and they seek our help to source the boat(s) that they seek. If we do not have what they seek in stock well be sure to find it through our network of dealers and banks for the right money.
Whether your buying a stock boat from us or one from another dealer we are well equipped to assist you with every step from inspection to final delivery of your boat or yacht to Australia. For example we can help you or your client with:
Finding a Boat or Yachtthat meets (or exceeds) your requirements in terms of condition, equipment, and of course price
Negotiate the Deal(including but not limited to title searches, accident reports, previous owner status, etc)
Survey & Physical Inspection(we have a longstanding partnership with a number of accredited marine surveyors, mechanics, and experts in most regions of the country)
Closing the Dealwe often act as intermediary for international buyers as most of our overseas clients prefer only to work with one turn-key partner
Pre-shipping Logisticsonce the deal is done and the boat paid for we assist in coordinating haul-outs, marina loadings, boat ramp pickups and inland U.S. land transport/trucking through our in-house logistics company Boatlogistic.com, Inc.
Pre-Export Preparation Sanitation, Fumigation, De-gassing of refrigerants.Australia has (as you probably know already) very specific and strict import restrictions for boats and vessels. The governing body is the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) which is part of the Australian Governments Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Depending on the geographical location of the boat and the required preparation of the vessel we can either prepare the boat for export to Australia while underway, or we can have it completed at our marina in Pompano Beach, Florida.
Australian Shipping Services Teamour Australian Shipping Services Team assist with Sanitize boats & yachts prior to port delivery AQIS will stop all boats that are dirty and soiled to check for insect/parasite infestations
Fumigation of boats and cradles according to AQIS-standard (Methyl Bromide 3.0 lbs / 1,000 cubic feet / 24 hrs) De-gassing of
Air-conditioning Systems (AC) Refrigeration HVAC HFC HCFC Providing HVAC Customs Certification
With our certificates our customer are NOT REQUIRED to obtain the otherwise very expensive Australian import licenses.
Trailer Import Permit AssistanceThe Australian Governments Department of Infrastructure and Transport requires that all imported boat trailers have an Import Approval. You can read more about the approval at the Departments website or you can download the .pdf-application Import a Small Road Trailer here.
Import Duties and Goods and Services Tax (GST)If youre buying a US-made boat, according to the United States-Australia Free Trade Agreement, you arent required to pay the 5% duty (as well supply the required waiver forms). You must, however pay 10% GST on all costs associated with the purchase of the the boat, ocean freight, duty, wharf charges, customs broker fees, and destination port fees..
ISPM-15 No Worries Mate We Fumigate All Wooden Cradles & Provide Proof of FumigationInternational Standards For Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 (ISPM 15) is an International Phytosanitary Measure developed by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) that directly addresses the need to treat wood materials of a thickness greater than 6mm, used to ship products between countries. Its main purpose is to prevent the international transport and spread of disease and insects that could negatively affect plants or ecosystems. ISPM 15 affects all wood packaging material (pallets, crates, dunnages, etc.) requiring that they be debarked and then heat treated or fumigated with methyl bromide and stamped or branded,[1] with a mark of compliance. This mark of compliance is colloquially known as the wheat stamp. Products exempt from the ISPM 15 are made from alternative material, like paper, plastic or wood panel products (i.e. OSB, hardboard, and plywood).Customs Broker Fees & Destination Charges in AustraliaTheres tons of websites out there claiming to be the know-it-all for import questions concerning boats & yachts to Australia. Fortunately, we are not one of them. While we can recommend quite a few competent companies in Australia it is ultimately up to you to pick a customs partner in your home port. As is true for all facets of our business we believe that there are no shortcuts to sustained success in business (or life for that matter). That said we recommend that you seek the advice of an Australian Customs Broker who is licensed by the Customs Brokers and Forwarders Council of Australia Inc CBFCA-Australia Website to inquire about recent legal and import changes pertaining to your planned import.
