The motor is a 20-hp Johnson P50 Seahorse 24 (manufactured between 1930-34). Around 1954, this motor was converted to racing specifications. To get higher RPM and more horsepower, the brass/bronze main bearings were replaced with ball and roller bearings, the ports were hand filled to allow better engine breathing, and the cylinder heads were milled to raise the compression. The motor runs great, but it needs new seals in the lower unit. The propeller housing was made in California by Pep Hubbell (a manufacturer of outboard racing parts). Which adds a gain in speed of about 9 mph.
The boat was produced by Thompson Brothers Boat Manufacturing Company of Peshtigo, WI. Its 12 feet long, weighs about 120 pounds, and is constructed out of cedar strip. The transom was raised 2- inches to get the cavitation plate out of the water to give it less drag and more speed. The transom is reinforced with additional knees that have been epoxied and screwed into place to make transom much stronger.
The approximate top speed of this rig is 45 mph.
