1970 Albin 25 Cruiser/Sailor-Onancock, VA-No Reserve
I dont want to start off on a negative note but please understand wining a bid on classifieds board does not open a discussion it closes the deal. Please review the lengthy description and the many pictures as well as the questions already asked before you bid. Ask any questions you like and come see the boat if you wish. Do your homework and please be considerate enough not to bid if you cant pay or if you cant arrange transportation and please do not try to back out of your obligation. That said:
Cricket is a Coastguard documented Albin 25 built in Sweden in 1970 to demanding standards to tackle the North Sea. She is hull # 459. The same hull was used for both the sailing model and the power only model. This one has the optional sailing rig. There is a huge following for these seaworthy boats and if you do a Goggle search you will see several owners groups. I have included a lot of information here and many pictures in hopes of answering most of your questions. Please read the information and do your homework on these great boats. Please Note You are bidding on the BOAT ONLY. This is a no reserve auction, so if you bid please be prepared to buy. There is no engine in this boat. Read further about the optional engine and trailer pictured. They do not go with the boat unless you buy them for additional money in addition to your bid on the boat. The basic Albin 25Specifications:Boat Name:

The projects are relatively small compared to most boat restorations but they will require some work, nothing that cant be done by anyone with minimal boat skills. She has the mast, boom and standing rigging if you want it to use her in the sailboat configuration. There are no sails. The boat is also equipped with dingy davits, a swim platform, double lifelines, stern and bow pulpits, searchlight, original push-button radio, compass, fresh water and sea water pumps at the galley sink, classic wooden cleats, windshield wipers, spotlight etc. The cushions are all there but at minimum the rear cabin ones will require replacing or recovering. The diesel cabin heater has been removed but retained for reinstallation if you choose. The sunroof will need to be recanvased or replaced with a hatch.Cricket has a lot of extra stuff not found on most Albin 25s. Her optional swim platform, dinghy davits, stanchions with lifelines and sailing rig alone are worth more than twice the minimum bid not to mention the 90% complete hardtop.
Above is the basic boat stuff. Here is Crickets story and an explanation as to why I cant finish the project:I acquired the boat two years ago and began a restoration. Cricket was owned a long time by an elderly woman who eventually passed away. No one paid the slip fees and the marina finally had to obtain title and sell her. Full disclosure: they were asking $12,000 for her with no trailer and a dead engine but I was able to buy her for less. Her engine was frozen and I removed it. I also started a full refit by removing all the bad stuff and fabricating a new trawler hardtop for livability and sun protection. I was planning to fix her up and do some or all of the Great Loop. Many people do this epic trip which circles the eastern United States up the East Coast through the Erie Canal, down the Mississippi River, around the Gulf Coast and back up the Inland Waterway. With a trailerable boat like this you can do it in stages. Well that was my plan when a neighbor put up his Albin 27 for sale at a very good price.Long story short I bought the other boat and am now boat poor and need to sell Cricket. I started the loop last spring, up to and through the Erie Canal and left the Albin 27 up there to finish the loop in the year(s) to come. So now I have two Albins and a backyard full of Cricket so reluctantly she needs to go, hopefully to someone who will finish her and enjoy her for many years to come. The boat is in Onancock, Virginia sold as is and it is the responsibility of the buyer to arrange transportation. I may consider a delivery within 200 miles for a fee. A $500 deposit must be made within 48 hours and full payment made within seven days. You are bidding on the Boat only. The trailer and motor pictured are available for purchase if you choose to.
Here are the particulars for the two other items sold separately or together:Engine: The engine is a Yanmar 2GM20F fresh water cooled two cylinder diesel with less than 100 hours on it which was taken out of a 27 foot sailboat. It comes with the control panel, shifter, shop manual, operation manual, installation manual, wooden cradle and an additional electrical cable extension. It also comes with a full sized wooden template for installation including a second set of new motor mounts. This engine is as pictured; with original factory paint (not repainted or touched up). As you can see it is like new and all hookups and fittings are labeled for easy installation. It is the appropriate size to drive this boat at hull speed and use less than a half-gallon of fuel an hour. The price of the engine is $3,000 firm.Trailer: The trailer is a LaodRite 5-Star aluminum I-beam two axle model with four-wheel disk brakes. It has a gross weight of 7,500# and a load capacity of 6,000#. It was purchased in October of 2013 to pick up the boat. The boat was on the hard so it was dry loaded and the trailer has never been in the water. It has traveled about 300 miles for one roundtrip, so it is essentially new. The price for the trailer is $3,000 firm.I have a lot more invested in both of these items but I am offering them at a reduced price if they go with the boat.Good luck if you bid and thanks for looking!
The following are answers to the questions asked previously:
Q:
Was the available engine fresh water cooled or raw water cooled?
Sep-21-15
A:
Thanks for the question. The engine is fresh water cooled through a raw water heat exchanger.
Q:
I want you to know your reply on engine size was spot on I use about 12-14 hp to drive at 7.2 knots 1600 rpm that yanmar was a very good choise Dave
Sep-19-15
A:
Dave, Thanks for the reply. I see no need to overpower a boat and throw money away. I hope some buyer sees it that way. Take Care and enjoy the ride.
Q:
Does the Yanmar turn at the same speed and direction as the original engine or will the prop need to be changed?
Sep-18-15
A:
The Yanmar turns in the opposite direction of the old engine but there is an appropriate size, hand and pitch three blade prop that will be included in the engine purchase. That prop will go with the engine sale not the boat sale. Going with the boat (and not in the pictures) is the original 25mm propeller shaft and three-blade prop. That prop has a chip out of it. I have the missing piece that would need to be welded if it were going to be used coupled with some other engine. Also included in the boat bits is a brand new one inch Albin Factory cutlass bearing if the new owner wishes to convert to a 1 shaft rather than the 25mm.
Q:
Could you elaborate a little on your rationale fo rthe 2GM as a replacement engine? I believe the Albin cam originally with a 22 or 36 hp engine so the 2GM seems slightly undersized. Kerry
Sep-17-15
A:
Kerry, Thanks for the question. You can ask ten people about how to power a cruiser and get ten different answers so take mine with a grain of salt. These boats were designed as displacement hulls not plaining hulls. That means they perform best at the hull-speed coefficient. Many folks have put increasingly larger engines in them that will actually push them above hull speed but in so doing the fuel consumption will double or even quadruple. The 2GM20 is a real workhorse of an engine, far better than its replacement models and quite sought after. It is comfortable at a much higher RPM while retaining good torque and providing amazing fuel economy. It also saves almost 300 pounds of weight. The sum total is good economic power. Yes you can drop a 36hp diesel in the same boat and push it above hull speed but you gain 1-2 knots more speed while burning maybe 200 - 300% more fuel. It is all a tradeoff. I prefer keeping the cruising in a cruising boat and not wasting money and resources for fractional speed difference. It all depends on what you want. That is why I am offering the engine separately so, if you choose, you can buy another engine and put more power in. I hope this helps
Q:
Can you post some pictures of the engine compartment in its current condition? What is the weight of the new engine? Is the hardtop removeable or would the new engine have to be taken in thru the side?
Sep-17-15
A:
Thanks for the good questions, I do not have any pictures of the engine compartment but it is quite unique in that it is fully covered and enclosed away from the bilge with its own ventilation oil sump and soundproofing. If you look online you can see it. I will try to take some pix in the next few days and post them. The engine weighs 251 pounds which is about 300 pounds less than the original engine but just as efficient for this boat. I removed it from the sailboat by hand on a wood cradle with two friends. It can be dropped in through the sunroof without interfering with the hardtop at all. The boat was designed for a straight drop in from the top. Take Care,
Q:
Interesting! Any delimitation of cabin or decks? Is there standing headroom in cockpit with the cover you put on? Is the cover wood (plywood) or fiberglass? Does the engine include transmission? Thanks. Mike
Sep-17-15
A:
Thanks for the questions Mike. I do not know of any deck or cabin delamination. I am 64 and I can stand straight-up under the hardtop. It is made of plywood reinforced with oak stringers like a canoe and the top surface has been fiberglassed and painted. Yes the engine includes the transmission. Take Care, John
