Up for auction is our 1984 Chris Craft Catalina .
The market for these Catalina's is very interesting and they retail anywhere from around $30,000 for the cheapest boats all the way to $75,000 and the average retail is around $45,000 if you look at Yachtworld . com .
These boats are loved for the huge amount of living space available in 2 separate cabins both with private bathrooms .
Now onto our boat , we are selling her as a project as she did take on water recently , luckily she did not go all the way down and we spotted the bow down and realized there was a problem . I have included a picture that was taken when we realized what was going on before we started to pump out the water so you can very clearly see just how much water was in the boat .
The GOOD , it did not get much over the main cabin floor only in the front as the bow went down to about the height of the base of the bed , it was pumped out within hours so there does not appear to be any damage to things like cupboard doors etc which usually swell when they get wet , this does not have that problem .
We had a professional marine mechanic come down and deal with the engines immediately .
The BAD , the engines are going to need work in order to get them running again , they are NOT locked up and have been cranked over and pickled .
An overall view of " Broadside " is as follows , her hull is in good condition , she was awlgripped a few years ago and the hull will show very well with a good cleaning . Up on deck the deck appears solid underfoot with no visible soft areas .
Broadside has a full bimini enclosure which is in good condition however there are 3 panels where the eisenglass could stand to be replaced but the sunbrella / canvas material is all good , as you enter the back cockpit we have just purchased replacement commercial carpet with a thick rubber backing to put down as it was our original intention to refurbish that area prior to this incident .
When you walk down into the main salon area you will be amazed at the amount of space there is , there is a full open galley in front of you with a built in sofa to starboard which opens up to be another double bed if required . The refrigerator / freezer was fairly recently replaced with a Norcold Marine unit for around $ 1400 . There is a built in microwave and stove pictured with a nice bar top area .
As you move through to the forward master cabin you will sell a lot of room with a good amount of storage space including a decent stand up cupboard for more storage , there is a comfortable double bed up forward and an en-suite bathroom which has a separate stand up shower stall , we were busy replacing the 2 toilets with a completely new system and new holding tank which is all in place other than the actual toilet itself , a good marine replacement toilet bowl new is around $200 .
The aft / back master cabin is huge , the full width of the boat with a large master bed , I think the largest bed for a boat of this size I have seen , there is plenty of cabinet space as pictured and again it has a stand up hanging closet .
The en-suite actually has a small bath tub in separate area in the bathroom with stand up shower .
Down to the all important engines , both engines have been replaced with factory rebuilt fresh water cooled Mercruiser 454's units prior to the incident , they have approx. 190 hours on each . After the boat had taken on water from a cracked pipe that froze which we were able to locate we had our mechanic come down to get both engines turning over . He drained all the water from the engines , removed the plugs and got the engines spinning over , at that point the plugs were reinstalled and the engines were filled with diesel by filling the block as well as through the carbs that way to make sure that the intakes and valves were covered with diesel , the engines are now both full of diesel and will need to be drained before trying to turn them over again . Although the starters did work I can tell you from past experience they will not work for long once exposed to open air and are going to need to be cleaned and rebuilt or just replaced , the same applies to the alternators .
The engine room is oily and is going to need a good scrub with some degreaser like " Dawn " the good news we had just repainted the entire engine room with gray bilge paint so it is fairly easy to clean .
You are going to need to go through the systems slowly , luckily the 110V system appears to be in good shape , the 12V system in the engine room is going to need to be looked at , the good news is after powering up the batteries I was still getting power up at the control station with all the gauges etc still working as they should .
The main electric control did not get wet at all .
We had purchased the boat with the intention of cleaning her up and selling her / flipping her for a profit now we are just trying to recover some of our initial outlay and have priced Broadside for around 30% of low market value ,I may still consider fixing her but right now I am somewhat disillusioned by this whole thing so I decided I would see if I could sell her as is . It was my plan to clean her up and list her for $25K which would put her at the cheapest boat ion Yachtworld so if you have some mechanical ability you should be able to get her going again and make some money , if you want to use her as a liveaboard you can do that as she is now I think .
We are selling her with a clear MD title which I am waiting for a replacement from the DNR currently , provided I have a reasonable deposit we can wait for the title replacement before you pay the balance , we have been open and up front about the condition and are obviously selling her as is where is , there are a number of marinas where she can move to in the area and some that do take liveaboards if need be .
I may consider trades but honestly would prefer to get paid cash and move on , in years gone by I have made some interesting trades with cars etc so I am open to suggestions .
Storage is paid until April 1st 2015 .
Please feel free to e-mail or call with any questions , if I am unable to answer I will call back as soon as I can within a day .
Thanks Matt phone
