For Sale - 1971 Boston Whaler Sakonnet
This boat has been in my family since it was purchased new by my father in 1971. He gave it to my grandfather for a number of years and it finally found its way to me ~10 years ago. It has never been used that much and is consequently it very good shape. My only reason for selling it is that I haven't used it in about 5 years and I've finally come to grips with the fact that I just don't live in a convenient enough place to own a boat. Except for a couple of trips to the NC Outer Banks to play in the sound, the boat has never seen anything but freshwater (and I was maniacal about flushing the motor and washing everything even after exposure to brackish sound water). The hull is in great shape. Look at the shine in the pictures! That is what the hull shines like after 5 years in my workshop. I just hit it with a hose and wiped with a towel and it shines. The interior gel coat is pretty pristine. No soft spots anywhere in the hull. The chrome rails are still shiny. They have a *small* amount of looseness where the wood holding the screws into the hull is showing wear, but it's a 43 year old hull. I've been in a lot of Whalers that are 20 years newer and have looser rails than this. The wood on this boat is the big eye-catcher. The boat originally came with a marine plywood foredeck that was painted white. I replaced all of that foredecking with solid teak about 6-7 years ago. It was a big project using the original decking as a template. I can't tell you how nice this foredeck is and how much I miss it on Whalers of this age that do not have it. It gives a place to sit and store stuff which is MUCH appreciated on a small boat.Themahogany center console was my next project that I never got to. The wood is still solid here. It just needs sanding and a fresh coat of marine varnish. My father pulled the original mahogany chest/seat out in the late 80's to install more comfortable seats, but he kept the original. You could put this back if you want. It is included in the sale. To be honest, the chest/seat is pretty, but not very comfortable to sit on.Motor - 1989 Evinrude 90hp. The motor could use some work. When I parked the boat a few years ago, it was because the motor was overheating. With this era Evinrude, a water pump needs to be replaced every few years and I'd be pretty confident that a water pump replacement and a carb clean-up and you'll be back on the water. But, I'm not guaranteeing anything on a 25 year old outboard. One noted troublespot on this era Evinrude was the Variable Rate Oiler that mixed the oil with the gas. Once the VRO broke on these motors, they usually never ran quite right again, but the VRO on this motor has never caused trouble.Trailer is a more recent model galvanized EZ-Loader. I have the title on this. The boat is actually too old to have a motor.Lots of other goodies are included: bumpers, lines, life-vests, 80s era water skis, etc.
